    I agree.. Alexi is a monster of a player. He would have been a cut above many of the shredders in the 80's but just a cut. There were tons of great metal guitarists back in my days of metal.
    I also think that many of the newer metal guitarists who are in bands that have cookie monster vocals and no guitar solos are probably shredders too. Unfortunately for them, the USA market hates guitar solos. I need to move to Europe.

        There is HOPE John G...solos are coming back it seems...It was a mission of Warrel and Loomis to bring the solo back...they told me that almost ten years ago!

And those guys can kick every today's metal players ass big time. I've seen tons of fusion players who could cut that Alexi's head off who's playing is lame and booring anyway IMO. Not only those players have chops, but they are super precise, they have a great feel and melodic sense. While metal heads practiced scales at home, jazz players shredded like a maniacs in front of big crowds.

          I love to listen to "Fusion Groovin'" on Live365 and there are guys on there that kill, have great tone, are melodic and are blazing fast.

          Someone like Al Dimeola can absolutely demolish most of these sweep dorks, and he has tone, taste and a sense of melody.

          Anyway, I think Yngwie should be the only dude who is allowed to get away with gratuitous sweeping.

            Al Dimeola is GOD. He started shredding durning the early 70's when there were no Eddie or Yngwie. He has accomplished everything, his music is soulful and very "touching" yet the technicality is out of this this world. And unlike Alexi the A-hole he is a humble dude.

              It seems like the whole "guitar hero" thing is coming back. A few years ago, you'd go into a music store and hear nothing but downtuned chording. Now, I hear alot of young guys ripping it up... it's only a matter of time before it comes back.

              Most of the good stuff does seem to be in Europe these days though...
