I know more Rush songs on guitar than any other band's songs. that was most of what I played back in the day when I was in my first years of really learning how to play. I used to put on any Rush album (on tape back then) and just play the whole thing. good times.

+1. I still have to try hard not to throw in "Lifeson-isms" when I write my own material. Heck, John Petrucci doesn't even bother trying!
What's great about the classic Rush material from the perspective of a guy learning the guitar is that the rhythm guitar parts are so lush and involved that you can play them without accompaniment and entertain yourself for hours.

I still remember how jazzed I was upon learning Xanadu the whole way through, the first time. I agree totally with what you said about his rythyms standing on their own.
the guitar players look damaged - they've been outcasts all their lives
Yep, I learned to play guitar to Van Halen and Rush.
I watch "Rush in Rio" it least once a month, I know I'm pathetic in some peoples eyes, but, I have to get my Rush fix.
One couldn't say enough good about them, they're great to me.
Yep, at some point I play "Trees" every time I pick up the geetar, and 2112 if my mind doesn't wonder me to far away and I forget.
Peace, Love and Happieness and all that stuff...
"Anyone who tries to fling crap my way better have a really good crap flinger."
I personally do not care how it was built as long as it is a good playing/sounding instrument.
Great band. Great musicians. I've seen them live for more than 20 years now and other than Geddy not screeching like he used to, they haven't lost a step.

Absolutely. I love playing rush tunes, guitar or bass. His rythms are the best. As you can tell by my screen name, I'm a huge fan. Heck, I bought a white EDS-1275 just to play Xanadu!

Good Lord! The rod up that man's butt must have a rod up its butt!
Great band and I'm glad to read all of the recommendations for "R30". I'll probably have to pick it up... soon. I guess one version of the DVD comes with the audio tracks on CD. I don't know if there's any bonus material with that deluxe package. Anyone know?
I definitely plan to pick up R30 as well. I've seen them live a half dozen times, dating back to the mid-80s, and the Vapor Trails show was the best I've seen. I caught the show in Boston and it was awesome. Especially considering the adversity that hit the band, Neil Peart in particular, prior to the album. This interview is a must-read for any Rush fan-
well that did it, I just spent an hour this AM jamming and re-learning Spirit of Radio and Entre Nous off Permanent Waves.
man those are some great songs.

The deluxe edition does not contain more footage than the standard edition.
The deluxe edition comes with the audio CDs, a backstage pass, an Alex guitar pick, and a Geddy pick ( ).

And he definitely is an overlooked guitarist.

Alex Lifeson is the most overlooked/underated guitarist!!
Learning any Rush on guitar is a challenge!! Or Bass!! Or drums!!

I COMPLETELY agree with you there. When I first worked on the Trees, the 5/4 time just before the solo always threw me out of my chair.
I miss my R30 tee-shirt I got from the show I saw in Concord,Ca.
One night after work a bunch of us went drinking.
I don't drink anything but beer.
But that night I must have had a couple pitchers of Margaritas.
I puked all over my R30 shirt. I had to chuck it after that.
