Bands that sound good detuned to B or lower?

I remember that thread awhile back that showed Dino Cazeres with an 8 string guitar. That brought up interesting (mostly disgusted) commentary. The question....

Are there bands that heavily detune (by that I mean a lowest string that is B or lower) that actually sound good in a live setting? Or does it just generally drown out in the mix?

I don't go to shows much anymore, but from what I remember most of the bands I saw sounded quite muddy. Bands that I can think of that I saw: Type O Negative, Korn, Staind, Fear Factory, and many more I'm probably not thinking of off hand. Staind probably had the best tone out of those, but even they still sounded quite muddy.

I've heard you guys say that Loomis' tone sounds like butt live and especially when he plays the 7-string.

Are there bands that actually do sound decent heavily detuned live? If so what is their gear secret? Or is there truth to the belief that heavy detuning just fights with the other instruments and is a bad thing?

I have fun playing detuned riffage on my Ibanez RG7621 at home, but I've never played it live. Just wondering what your thoughts are.

petrucci and vai arent terrible, but IMO anything lower than c# starts getting out of guitar range.

Anybody ever see Cathedral? They are tuned super low. I have never so I don't know about live.

Has anyone heard the band God Among Insects? I think they are down-tuned to F or F# or something like that [img]/images/graemlins/headbang.gif[/img]

Morbid Angel have some Bb songs which sound great.. and Nile is awesome and they are tuned to A

Divine Empire sounded pretty damn good when i saw them. They tune down to A i think

The only two bands I can think of off the top of my head that I saw that had tuning that low (drop B) are Bleeding Through and Throwdown, and they cut fine. I think a lot of it has to do with how you set your amp, and making sure you compensate with using thicker strings.

illdisposed (B), cannibal corpse (Bb), cataract (B), nevermore (Bb)

just to name a few....esp. cannibal corpse had an amazingly clear sound believe it or not

A couple of you have mentioned Nevermore....they do indeed play 7-string guitars, but I've heard several say that their live tone is terrible and especially the 7-string songs. Did it sound okay when you saw them? Maybe this varies with the venue.

Regarding those bands that do sound good, any ideas what their secret is to making it sound good in a live setting?

I just don't get the need to tune down below C#. If you want to sound like a bass, play the bass.
