• Symphony X

My bass player lent me the Odyssey, and I'm really digging the first three tunes. After that, it mellows out a bit. I'm still giving it a listen though.

What releases from them maintain the heaviness throughout?

The Odyssey is their heaviest record, but The Divine Wings of Tragedy comes second and is probably their best album.

I have a bunch (if not all) of their stuff, but have no idea what is what. I have no idea what songs are on what CDs etc... They stay in a CD Magazine that gets moved around my vehicles, haha..

Bill would know, he's a fan that pays attention to songs and CD titles.

IMO, Just buy it all. It grows on you.

All their stuff has loads of variation. The Odyssey is their heavest album by far. The next album to get from them would be V for sure. Most fans agree that it's their best.

EDIT - most fans except Agresivo

Cool thing is, they recorded The Odyssey themselves at the guitarists house using protools. They programmed all the orchestra themselves too. A real DIY album that sounds amazing.

Division - American Metal that doesn't suck. Much. Even on Facebook.

Actually, most fans I know consider "Divine Wings" to be their best. "V" is probably the most adventurous, and has some great stuff on it, but "Divine Wings" is simply a monster without a weak song, IMO...

DIY recording huh? There are some heavy guitar tones on there... The main riff from The Wicked sounds like it could be on a Pantera record. Actually, he's got some sweet guitar tones going on overall. I love that tight rhythm sound.

I'll definitely be picking up more of their stuff. Very talented band. I like the singers voice too... he sings but doesn't have that annoying quality in his voice that the guy in Dream Theater does.

The Odessey is brilliant but really theres hardly anything else that they've done that I can stand. most of their earlier stuff is just trying too hard to be progressive. they mellowed out a bit for the odessey (minus the epic track)

I love that whole album and I cant wait to hear more

I like Odyssey the best, perhaps because it is the heaviest. I've got all their studio albums. I'll go through phases where I'll put all the cds in my car and rotate through them a few times before putting them back in the rack. Good stuff indeed. But for some reason, I have to be in the mood for Sym. X whereas Dream Theater I can listen to anytime.

I'm a bit of a SymX fanboy, but I have to recommend their most recent four albums--Divine Wings, Twilight In Olympus, V, and The Odyssey. Odyssey is the heaviest of the four, but they are all really cool. If you are looking for nonstop heaviness, SymX is probably not the band for you, since they are basically prog metal.

I've got The Odyssey, Divine Wings, and Live on the Edge of Forever. They kick ass!!! I took lessons from Mike Romeo in the mid to late '80s... great guy! His old band Phantom's Opera was also pretty cool. I hung out with their old bass player, Tommy Miller, a few times in the early '90s, too.
