Re: Need some new stuff to,listen to...any ideas?

Freyr - No, I'm not Canadian. Well, maybe some of my soul is (part of my family from decades ago is French/Canadian). I have always been deeply into Canadian metal. It's something about the eerie tonality and precision that most appeals to me but I find this taste is far in the minority in the states. One of the first underground bands I ever had contact with was Obliveon, some 16 years ago. They helped solidify my interest in the sound while Luc Lemay's (Gorguts) style was a HUGE influence on my early playing and vocalizing. One of the biggest disappointments for me is that I never got to meet Luc or even see Gorguts live! I don't suppose YOU know what ever happened to Gorguts original drummer, Stephane Provencher, do you? He could be the most underrated death metal drummer ever. I'm also a big fan of Voivod. Any other new upcoming Canadian bands I should check out?

Martyr... but you've probally already heard of them before.

I don't know what happened to their original drummer, actually I've only heard a small handful of Gotguts songs.

From around my area... Hellacaust and Terratomb are both pretty good (hellacaust.com terratomb.com should be the sites) as well as Nexum, but those bastards never realeased their demo yet.

Cephalectomy is also good, for their style of music... check them out, some people think it's too chaotic. (I dunno url off hand, try cephalectomy.com?)

Dick Dale, The Ventures, Los Straitjackets, The Space Cossacks, Blue Stingrays, Aqua Velvets, The Lively Ones, The Astronauts, Link Wray, Man or Astroman?, etc.

I found surf music and derivatives to be a good diversion from metal and got fairly deep into it a few years back. That surf speed picking laid a lot of groundwork for metal.

The most irritating thing about being into surf music is that when I always told people I like surf music, they always said, "oh yeah, The Beach Boys are great." I just never could really get into The Beach Boys and they aren't surf music. That's beach music. Anything with vocals isn't surf.
