OK, first of all I'm biased because I'm a huge Metallica fan.
Kirk is not the greatest player on earth, but he is definitely good enough. The fact that his picking hand can keep up with Hetfield on the quick riffs is proof of his skill. His solos on the older stuff are pretty good I think, but he does abuse the wah a bit.
And he fits into the structure of Metallica quite well by playing the songs - but not being a total shredder. I don't think Hetfield could have dealt with someone like Yngwie for very long...
My biggest disappointment with Kirk is that he gave into the trend and pressure of not playing solos on St. Anger. That album (for a variety of reasons) is perhaps the single biggest disappointment of my musical life.
