Nice downpicking, he cranks. I find his leads average but right for the song. Remember that these guys did MOP when they were just old enough to drink! Quite an accomplishment!

I'll never forget when they showed up on the cover of Rolling Stone with short hair and piercings. I knew right then and there, that metal had died.

Because Metallica is "the" Metal right?

[/ QUOTE ]

NO, because they were one of the last hold outs that was still popular, still carrying the flame for public consumption. A Pop metal band that still made metal and still had that "proper" metal image. I knew there was tons of metal still ou there...but Metallica was THE face of metal. When they caved and went with the latest style trends with both their music and fashion, I felt bad.

Back to Kirk, I like everything he does but his solos. I just never was moved by them. However, the rhythm combination of him and James always got my head banging. They are the masters of that domain.

Sleep. The sound doesn't collapse to riffs of early eyes either.

Well, for sure he cannot be compared to Petrucci, Friedman or Vai, but I think that his solos fits perfectly the songs of Metallica. ( apart from his over-wah usage in concerts)

The intro of "For Whom the Bell Tolls" doth kick my ass. There were none higher than old school Metallica. They were one of my favorite bands back in the day. To me they rank as one of the biggest sell-outs in the history of metal. I have had absolutely zero respect for them since Load, but they started down that path with the video for "One".

Re: Since you don\'t hear much of Kirk on the CDs..

The only Metallica albums I cannot live without are Kill em all (#1) Ride the lightning (#2) MOP (#2.5) and Garage Days Revisited (#3) - And justice and Black album kinda rub me wrong for some reason, but I can put up with them sometimes. I really thing it's because Mustaine helped kill em all and cliffy carried them after that. It seems to be the only explanation why the others don't stick.

I am not a metallica/megadeth fanboy or mustine worshipper, so I may have some facts messed up, but and justice didn't stick with me. It seemed cool at the time, but doesn't have the staying power of the previous albums for me.

Obviously this guy did.... *smirk*

The truth of the matter is that Kirk hasn't done anything to grow musically since Justice. I cannot stand them now. But, MOP and RTL are two of the top metal albums ever made. But, they need to put down the fucken cameras. I wonder what St. Anger would have sounded like if they had all the tonal elements of Master of Puppets.

Kirk isn't bad, he's just mediocre and not very unique. Hats off to him though...... he's written a few really cool solos and is living the dream.

Good solos:
The Call of Ktulu (Wait, nevermind I think that was Mustaine. Cool solo anyway)
The Unforgiven
Enter Sandman
Fade to Black
One
Trapped Under Ice-Kinda Kerry Kinged, but cool anyway

I'm sure there're more, I just can't think right now.

good Kirk solos:

Sad But True
One
Fade To Black
Four Horsemen
All the harmonized stuff w/James (slow part on Master of Puppets gives me goose bumps to this day)

He has lots and lots of good solos, but I agree that he's not the best player out there, but his stuff definitely fits in with what James is writing, so who cares if he can't play 50 nps arpeggios?

and to all you St Anger haters and the guy who thinks metal/Metallica has died... Rick Rubin is confirmed to produce the next Metallica album so don't give in to your own bullshit just yet

ps. shadravan: if st anger is the biggest disappointment of your musical life, what do you think of load/reload?
just curious, as most people tend to hate "anything after AJFA" me? I like em all, St Anger has a few good songs albeit, as an album it isn't strong enough.

heck, I like St. Anger, it's raw and cool.

most of the songs on AJFA were weak IMHO

RTL, Black and MOP are my favourite.

Oh man, I can't believe anyone would call out Enter Sandman as a good solo. Sorry dude, but that is one of *the* least tasteful ramblings any guitarist has ever recorded. That's the musical equivalent of a Christmas fruit cake.

As for the harmonized stuff with James on MOP, when it came out I remember reading in one of the guitar mags that James did all of those himself in the studio. That would explain why they are good.
