Re: Since you don\'t hear much of Kirk on the CDs..

Kirk is an average player. Not great, not poor. IMHO, the dude's style has a significant lack of melody to it, particularly when soloing. So many of his solos just sound like miscellaneous scale position rambling & wanking. (...Like my own playing often does. )

But Kirk's real problem is that he's thrust into the limelight as a "guitar hero" and, quite frankly, his playing doesn't really live up to that stature at all. Just MHO.

ps. shadravan: if st anger is the biggest disappointment of your musical life, what do you think of load/reload?
just curious, as most people tend to hate "anything after AJFA" me? I like em all, St Anger has a few good songs albeit, as an album it isn't strong enough.

St Anger was a much bigger disappointment than anything from the Load era because....all the hype prior to the release of St Anger kept saying that it was going to be "old school" Metallica. Which of course was a complete lie. I was hoping for something like MOP but I instead I got some kind of nu metal crapola with a bad snare drum

Around the Load timeframe (mid to late 90's), I pretty much knew that Metallica wouldn't be doing their best work so I wasn't really disappointed with what they delivered. It wasn't great, but I'll take Load or Reload ANY DAY over St Anger.

If you took the best songs from load and reload, you would have a pretty cool hard rock album.

I remember an interview with Metallica before st anger was released where one of the guys said it was reminiscent of Entombed.

just to stay off topic, I think Load is one of the best rock records ever made (rock not metal) but Reload only had a couple of good songs IMO.
I never buy into hype like "this is gonna sound like such and such" and I was delighted to hear it being heavier, but some of the songs are too long and they tried too hard making it sound "unproduced" and yes everyone are annoyed by the snare..but they did that on purpose of course. You can see in the SKOM movie the part where Kirk debates that he doesn't wanna leave out solos just for the sake of everyone else leaving solos out...but you don't get to see who actually made the decision.
Oh well.. I don't miss his wah-wanking on any of those songs anyway

Re: Since you don\'t hear much of Kirk on the CDs..

Personaly as someone has said, the solo's he does fits right in with the rythems James writes, and if you did have a super shreader in there i do not think you would know them like we know them today.

Also to where people say his solo's make no sense, i will tell you now, i am a long time shredder and some of the best solo's came from people that did not follow rules in soloing. I will also tell you his solo's are alot better then some of these bands today that are on top that everyone praises. Yes there are some really talented new guys out there, but alot of these newer bands have got to break the mold and do something different and learn how to play a little better. (please someone kill the cookie monster)

As to there new music, i was disappointed with st anger, not so much for the lack of solo's, but for that stupid ass snare drum which killed the whole album. I also agree where people say they were trying to hard to make it sound unproduced that it really sucked, however i would rather listen to that album over some of the newer stuff out there. Give me a well produced album any day and i am happy, you guys can have the raw uncut stuff if you want.

I dont expect any band to sound the same through there whole career, as a musician myself my style always changes as well as my style of music, it is part of life. But hell they did take a step back with St Anger, but do you think they would have stayed on top if they kept writting MOP over and over again, no way, black album gave them a reason to continue on, of course maybe they should have stopped after black.

Kirk is a great player, but then I love the so-called hacks. I'd rather crank Kirk, or Ace, or Ramones, or Dave Evans from U2 or any of the other hack guitarists, than be bored listening to Vai, Malmsteen, Petrucci, Batio, or any of the other so-called greats. I have a feeling most other people do too........

The outro solos in One, the outro solos in Fade to Black the solos in Disposable Heroes and Ride the Lightning (the song). Not solos but there are some badass lead riffs (call what ever you want but they only occur at one point in the song) in Damage Inc and Frayed Ends of Sanity and of course the legendary DIE! riff in Creeping Death. Though I think some of those badass lead riffs are more Hetfield than Hammet.

I always thought that Ride the Lightning was their best album, not Master of Puppets.
