Re: Since you don\'t hear much of Kirk on the CDs..

i tried so hard to like metallica when i was in high school and master of puppets had just come out. i remember liking for whom the bell tolls; we played it in the band i was in, and i bought ride the lightning.

i just....didn't get it.

other than that one song, fade to black, and the guitar riff for sad but true, the rest of their catalog goes right over my head. man, i tried so hard to like them (and iron maiden, now that i think of it), but i think it was much like trying to teach a pencil how to speak mandarin chinese!

i've got nothing against kirk at all, but how the hell are you going to be able to learn to play the songs by solely watching the video? granted, i only watched a couple minutes of it (and yes, nice downward picking!), but i didn't notice the "lick thirty seven....slow" (some of you will get that!) in the first few moments.

sorry, i'm lame.

c'mon Ace is not a hack, he is million times better than Kirk

Well, I guess "better" is a personal opinion. But by any measurable standard, is Ace "better" than Kirk? I'm thinking ummmmm....no.

Ace vs. Kirk - I'd take Ace - his guitar smoked and his solos were listenable. Kirk sounds like every bad wanker at Guitar Center on the last Saturday before Christmas.

I disagree. All the wankers I hear at GC tune their guitars to drop B and don't play anything resembling a solo.

And I don't think anyone was saying Ace wasn't "cool" back in the day, he most definitely was a god.

But from a pure skill standpoint, Kirk destroys Ace. Even if you don't like Kirk's solos....there is no f-ing way Ace could play the rhythm or the lead to Battery

Re: Since you don\'t hear much of Kirk on the CDs..

I hate like hell to defend Kirk but I have to say...Back when RTL and MOP were in regular rotation on my getto blaster, I was quite inspired by solos on...Fade to Black, Disposable Heroes (Probably my fav) and Sanitarium. I really thought he would keep this going at the time but he just seemed to get lazy with the ideas...Or just run out of em...

Ace...Cool guitar figure but...Honestly, one of the last famous guitar players I would use in the same sentance as "Graet" or "Better"..Unless it was something like "Ace is not so 'GREAT'"...or "I am a 'BETTER' guitarist than Ace"

Sorry..That was cheap and un called for...Still true though...

Mind you...If you count the guitar solos Bob Kulick did...Does that count as a Ace solo? Cuz you might have something there.

ok you bunch of smartasses

anyone says who Ace suck, I wanna hear your playing, show me how you write better solo than Love Gun

and he had one of the best tones durning the 70's and he picks hard as a motherfucker

as for tehcnical standpoint, well Kirk can't keep vibrato - wich is the most important technique - in tune to save is life

Questionable. And subjective. I preferred other's tone.

Well it's all subjective of course but...Have you checked out some of the guitar monsters in the MP3 section? There are dozens of players on this site who are all around "Great" players.

You might not like it but, I'll put my money where my mouth is for the hell of it...My contribution to Petes Jam...(And by no means is this the best contribution in the least either)

I was never a huge fan, but appreciated the music all the same. But I never found Kirk's playing inspiring. I've been called out here before for making such assertions: "just because you think you're better than him" "it's cool to bash Kirk's playing now" etc etc. But I really never did like his playing. Metallica was all about the riffs to me. In fact, not many thrash guitarists' lead playing did much for me at all early on.

Maybe it's because I discovered Gary Moore & Victims of the Future before I'd stumbled across Metallica, Anthrax, et al.

Although I started to come around once I heard Alex Skolnick. See, if Testament had gone off like Metallica did, all the fanboys could rave all day about Alex's playing & I'd have to agree with them.

It's hard for me to give Kirk cudos but, at the time those few solos inspired me...I used to think about what it would have been like if Skolnick played for Metallica.

Dave I've heard tons of clips on the MP3 section, yeah we have a lot of great players but I can't compare them to Ace, Ace's writing is on totally different level.

G, Gary Moore and Ace have more in common than you can think of
Heavy picking attack, cutting thru tone, phrasing patterns etc. I'm sure Gary picked up something from Ace

Who cares if Kirk is technically better than Ace? Ace's solos are listenable to me. When Kirk starts to solo I can hardly wait until he's done. From a solo composition standpoint, Kirk is no more sophisticated than Ace - he just plays faster and makes poorer note choices than Ace.
