Kirk may not have done much to take notice to since the Black Album, but the guy kicked ass and lot of it back in the day.

I don't think it's fair to compare Kirk to Ace. Ace comes from a very different era and a very different style of music. While he did indeed write some great music and sing and blow shit up on stage, KISS was just as well known for their stage show and makeup as they were for their music. I grew up on KISS and was HUGE fan in the 70's, but most of the kids only knew KISS for their theatrics and didn't know the first word to any of their songs. I did as I listened to them religiously and I'm sure many here did as well, but most of the kids I went to school with who claimed to love KISS didn't know shit about them, just the gimmick.

Kirk has never claimed to be a shredder, but I hear people moaning about that. Kirk is/was a thrash lead player. Loud, fast, heavy, aggressive, rebellious metal... Not a shredder. I don't know if there even was such thing back then... Look at Kerry King, sloppy fucking lead player, but that doesn't stop him and no one bitches about it. But for some reason Kirk is a target for criticism.

I'm one of the few people I know that actually likes Kirk. I just think he's a great guitarist. He's no Mustaine/Friedman, but he's a lot better than me, LOL! When I started I had fun learning his solos in Fade to Black and Seek & Destroy...

I would not bash Kirk, he is probably a good guy. But I confess I wondered for a while why he got stuck at some point, arguably fairly low. Well, this is applicable to Metallica in general though. Disclamer - Metallica was one of my faves for a long time, right until and including MOP.
