TT Quick, haha. My cousin used to have a jacket with a TT Quick patch on it. People would always ask who TT Quick was. We had to explain that Dave DiPietro was our cousin (my 3rd or something). Shame I never met the guy but my cousin did and said he ripped on guitar when he went to his house. His jaw was on the floor...

For those that don't know Dave gave lessons to Zakk for a while.

Dave rips!! I was always wondering why they didn't get any praise for their music. I have just about everything that they ever produced, starting from the EP to the live stuff. I have heard that they periodically get together and do reunion shows for the fun of it.

I don't like their version of Child of Sin on "Metal" compared to the EP version!

I'm 36, and I can't put anything in my CD player that's been made past 1988. Even old Duran Duran is starting to sound good to me.

I really like the Cars. One of the few "pop" bands of the 80's that I did like.

And this is anything new? This is how it always has been and always will be, even with songs today, you have certain groups that are great and set trends, then you have a million groups that follow that style and all sound the same.

That's true, but the hair metal scene was very narrowly cast both in terms of style and songwriting. And I'm just saying that most of it aged very poorly in my opinion--some of that's down to the production, but the heavily formulaic songwriting and rigid stylistic conventions play a big part, too. To my ears, most '70s hard rock/"proto-metal" has held up much better. When I first got into the more melodic side of the current metal underground, it seemed kinda retro to me until I went back and listened to a lot of '80s stuff and saw how much better many of the underground bands are now. A band like Kamelot has a distinct '80s influence, but their writing, playing and 'concept' are way beyond most of what went down in the '80s.

As is alot of todays music, underground, on headbangers ball etc.. You have really good bands and then you have alot of crappy copy cats. All typed cast, writting with the same formula as every other band out there right now, dressing the same exact way. Yes you have a few bands that will stay, just like you do from the 80's. But when it comes down to it, every style of music, every generation has the same thing, really good bands that defined the formula with alot of talent, and then many bands that followed the formula that were semi talented.

I am also the same, i love listening to the bands i really enjoyed back then today, these bands are along the lines of the crue, ratt, ozzy, whitesnake etc... These are bands i owned every album, loved pretty much every song. Then there are alot of bands that had one hit wonders that i still love to listen too, but could care less for the rest of the album, or i loved there first album (poisen/cinderella-please no bashing) and everything after just wasnt as good.

80's rockers and pop musicians were the best songwriters, who cares if their formula was simple, the music was catchy and that counts. And the music was happy, this is also very important for me personally.

...Slaughter, Tim Kelly was a very very good guitar player, great melody, vibrato and chops. He was kinda like George Lynch.

I am also 38, and enjoy the stuff I grew up with just as much now as I did then. Oh, and I once referred to Slaughter on the air as...."Just laughter with an 'S'. That got a few phone calls!

And Tim Kelly was quite the player, and an even better person. RIP Tim.

80's music rocked! From hair metal to new wave. I think it's sounds even better today because most of the new music just sucks. There have been very few talented new guitarists come out after Zakk's intro.

Interesting thread. I'm inclined to agree with pro-fusion.
Even though I'm not so old (yet ) I was born in '81, started listening to AC/DC in 1986, pretty soon went from there to Metallica and was die-hard fan for years....I have a broader listening tolerance now (in lack of a better term..) I listen mostly to metal but a lot of rock also, like audioslave, chili peppers etc.
Anyway recently I've been checking out some of the famous 80's stuff...and I agree with pro-fusion, most of them seem to me to have followed a recipe both on image and music...but I actually like White Lion Thanks to Vito Bratta, his stuff is great...Very melodic and he can rip it up with very nice phrasing. You guys are probably gonna laugh/want to kill me (or both ) but I don't even dig most of the VH albums...some of the songs are cool but I think a lot of it's not very good, I can see that VH was probably -the- live rock band back then..but a few of the albums are pretty weak to my ears!

It's true though that a few bands set the standard and create something new, then everybody else will try to copy that...and then it just contiunes and kinda forces everything to be recycled every once in a while...which is probably good.

I quote Primus' song The Year of The Parrot:

"You take a Zeppelin song, alter it a bit - and you've got yourself a hit"

those guys rule.
