dude you are so full of shit, no great player would say anything bad about that playing because they all have experienced that PERIOD

saying i'm full of shit really doesn't help your argument...i think all players are open to criticism regardless of experience, ability, age, whatever....the man is and will always be one of the greatest guitarists ever, and i'm not denying that...i just don't think he needed to play it like he did...he didn't seem that nervous in the vid, and he clearly was more than capable of just playing the song, but he just decided to whip it pout really flashy and didn't pull it off in my opinion, end of story...i wasn't expecting him to nail it but i felt given the chops he showed he easily could have

Fair to critisize if you want to. But why waste the energy.

There is a saying something like..."its not the person who tries and fails but the person who is too afraid to try at all that...." (don't quite remember the exact saying).

See the point is he tried - he pushed himself to get out and do it even if he was scared to death.

Even if you know you are not quite up to par to play something but get out and try - this gives you the balls and experience to keep at it until you get good.

So myself - I don't criticize the attempt. Because what counts is the experience of doing it towards your development as a player - not how well you nail it at 16 years old.

Its simple for me. Good playing is good playing and that video proves how wicked Jason Becker was.

Does anyone have the video of Becker sitting in his bedroom playing a classical piece on a jazz-type guitar? I don't think he's even 16 yet and it would end this discussion!

I'm sure 99.9% of that audience thought he was a fucking god from that performance. Take a guess who the other .1% were. Guitar players perhaps? Countless times I've read here on the JCF gripes about the treatment some members receive from players in the audience at their gigs.

I try to respect every player, no matter what their skill level and I certainly don't have the balls to criticize someone who's doing what I'll never do and that's playing in front of a crowd. The purpose of playing live is not to gain the approval of fellow players but to have fun doing something that you love and sharing it with other people.

I agree with you but keep in mind that Jason Becker was not playing on that stage for fun. He was making a statement and that statement was... I will be a famous shredder one day VERY soon. He was right. His playing was ruthless and purposeful and EVERYTIME he played live or recorded something he did it to attract attention to achieve his dream even at a much younger age than 16. That is not the playing of a 16 year old on his high school stage for the fun of it. That was one of his first indications of the GREATNESS to come.
Jeez guys.. listen to it. He's 16. Its 1986. C'mon.

I can't remember the name of the guy who "had the skills to pay the bills" but this reminded me of it. Ditto Ron and JG, I'd love to hear an MP3. I'm always open to listening and learning new things..

I thought his playing was brilliant, gifted..he was doing some incredible things and showed the courage in taking risks with tack he has even today as non player IMO.

I think he was 17 there...the bach piece where he's playing an Ibanez 335 copy? He goes thru most and starts screwing up and says..'F-it.. it's too hard, don't even try"

I wish I still had tapes and videos of when I was 16..someone does somewhere. I thought I was good, but I'm sure I was no where near Beckers ability. I had no clue what an arp was even if I was doing them.

there's a jason becker DVD that features 2 clinics as well as the early stuff you guys are talking about, and a cacophony live performance (marty's hair ). check it out!

yeah, that's awesome...i mean, he doesn't even screw up badly, it's just a minor fuckup IIRC. i bet most guys here would ignore it and just continue playing the piece
