Oh...OK, yeah that's true...could you imagime gettin' that gig..doin' those tunes ..at that time..with only weeks notice.

boy that's alot of "homework"..

Vai pulled it off nicely considering..that's what makes Vai..well Vai!

Well, after replacing Yngwie in Alcatrazz, it must have been a piece of cake for Vai to "replace" Eddie in DLR's band. Who else has been a greater designated replacement player than Steve Vai?

I have the Live at the Astoria DVD and there is NO doubt that Vai can sweep like a madman NOW. I was talking about 23 years ago, when Yngwie was still pretty much unknown himself.

I've always loved that solo A LOT
I mean that's the reason I love Steve
listen to HIS melody
most of the other guys who are referred to as melodic players usually play some phrasing lines in the usual minor scale (guys like Schenker and so on)
but not Steve, he has his own thing that NO ONE else does, it's sound very mystical, magical, a little bit happy and very unique.

I've got the G3 Live in Denver DVD.

As impressive as Satriani and Vai's playing were, I'm sure that I'm not the only one who was more surprised to see how fat Yngwie had gotten (the other video featuring Yngwie that I own was filmed in 1985, during the "Marching Out" tour).

It must be a great feeling to have huge musical vision, and the technical ability to achieve that vision.

Vai has both, he truly is a master.

first the vision (omg he has the best inner hear and perfect pitch I've ever heard of) and then the technique to play all the stuff he comes up in his head

Well, there are some sweeps (albeit small ones) in Attitude Song, which was recorded after or during his tenure with Zappa and before the Alcatrazz thing I think. I really doubt Steve was 'totally new' to the technique.

BTW, first place I saw sweeping was a CHET ATKINS lesson in frets magazine in '83 or so, and it was a reprint from the late 70s/early 80s! Chet called them 'superlicks'.

Well, Chet Atkins was a real guitar god! Doesn't surprise me at all that he'd have that technique down along with just about every other! I don't think he used a Floyd but other than that he could do anything!

The Attitude Song is from his very first solo album, recorded in 1984. After Zappa, and Before the 1985 Alcatrazz album, "Disturbing the Peace" (the only Alcatrazz album Vai played on)

There is also some 4 string sweeps on "Blue Powder" which, although was featured on Vai's second album, Passion and Warfare (in 1990), it was actually recorded in 1984 for Carvin amps as a single, it was a Demo for their X100B amp, which Vai used thoughout the Zappa years and on the Flex-Able album.

That means I can play the intro.

p.s. Country dudes can shred with the best of them. I used to watch Danny Gatton down in DC all the time. Not 100% country, but it had a country flair to it. Vince Gill can rip it up and this Johnny Hiland cat is pretty damn sick.

Is this Alcatrazz concert available for purchase? If I recall, there were only about 6 dates done with Vai. I think one of them was in the Villa Real in McAllen and I could swear I remember hearing radio ads for it.
