Re: What EVH has to say about MA (circa Fair Warning)

what tune was it that MA opened up with that little bass solo that sounded like a wounded whale? You're No Good? or was it off of 4?

He defends him at the first album.. "damn fine bass player"
..could follow all the changes that the band took (musically) Seems strange this is all coming out now after all these years. Ed has gone the way of Ozzy as far as I'm concerned.

Man, pick up the latest Guitar One. EVH just rips, and i mean RIPS, into Michael Anthony. Everything from his band contributions to his playing to his tone. This was a Fair Warning era interview so it might be old news to some of you.

Is that the one with Pete Townsend on the cover? I just went out looking for it and that's the only issue of Guitar One I saw.

the issue after. evh is on the cover. i just got it in the mail so it might not be on the news stands yet.

Re: What EVH has to say about MA (circa Fair Warning)

I dunno. It wasn't just Ed's soloing that appealed to me. As stated by somebody above, Ed could groove his ass off. Some of the rhythms that he created are clinics on how to play rhythm guitar in a rock band. SRV was like that too... It may lack the surgical precision that you hear today, but it has alot more soul.

You gotta remember, guys like Malmsteen, EVH, Satch, Vai, and probably even Rhoads were so developed by the time they made it, that there really wasn't/isn't much more they could do to be innovative in their particular styles. The thing is, they are some of the most influencial guitar players to ever pick up the instrument, and that in itself is something to be respected.

I saw Ed in Detroit in 2004, and he was great. I wasn't sitting their analyzing every note he played though... I was drinking some beers and rocking out. Again, it was a great show and I'm glad I saw Ed in great form on what was probably his last tour.

Having said all that, it is too bad he is an ass. I think he's just always been insecure with himself.

I find it difficult to critcize Ed's current condition.Yes,it is sad,and yes, all(including Ed) are being robbed here.

BUT.....

None of us know what it is like to be a prisoner of our fame. Don't you think that he regrets not being able to do the things we take for granted?Taking your kids to McDonald's or Disneyland is an option for us,but do you think he can do it? Sure,he could afford to have the place to himself, but where the hell is the fun in that??

Re: What EVH has to say about MA (circa Fair Warni

The bass solo that sounds like Whales comes at the beginning of "You're No Good."

Eddie is perhaps the best "loose" rhythm player in all of rock and roll. I prefer his grooves to his solos. Aside from some incredible solos, like "Push Comes to Shove", I really don't seek to learn Ed's solos. However, I try to learn as many of the grooves as I can. They are just awesome. I don't think anyone has ever put down grooves as cool as "Somebody Get Me a Doctor", "Unchained", "Drop Dead Legs", "Ain't Talking About Love", "Humans Being", etc. etc.

Mike
Sleep. The sound doesn't collapse to riffs of early eyes either.

Mike..yes all awesome..and all OLD news!!

You are preaching to the choir ..you don't need to sell me how great Ed WAS..

WAS

Ed's "formula" has been achieved and surpassed..by guys right here on this forum..there is dudes that can nail his shit better than he can nowadays..this is fact!

Just like Reb nailing George's shit better than George...some guys age gracefully and some just lose their "magic".

"Me wise magic" sucked..we learned and played that slop ten years ago..I learned it in an hour...what a piece of crap..and that was a decade ago

Yeah, Ed's coming back..SURE he is..so is Jesus...go ahead and waite for them!

He definitely had a way with rhythm work.
A few more songs to mentioned that were some of his better written songs because of the rhythm lines.
Classic VH:
I'm The One
Beautiful Girls - listen to this carefully
Romeo Delight
Hear bout it later
Little Guitar - the actual song...Good writing
Gir Gone Bad - My favorite VH tune...love the rhythm, masterpiece.
Can't get this stuff no more

Hagar era:
Pleasure Dome
After Shock

Ed was indeed in his day, a very good writer even though most paid more attention to his solos, when it came to writing he was no slouch.
Peace, Love and Happieness and all that stuff...

"Anyone who tries to fling crap my way better have a really good crap flinger."

I personally do not care how it was built as long as it is a good playing/sounding instrument.

Yes, there's a bee in the pudding.

If it sounds like I'm coming down really heavy on Eddie..I AM

That dude is the reason I'm even talking on this board and playing guitar..

He let me down for far too long..since he gave up on himself..I gave up on him..So I took what he gave me and moved on.

I'll treasure the memories..I dedictaed a lot of love to him since I was 13...when they came out in '78!

My ol' VH "tribute" band is testimony to that!!

I'm SOOOOO done with that dude...alot of players were inspired by Ed as well..I think he let alot of people down..He gave up on himself therefeore so did I.

He's much too self destructive and lost ALL dignity with me..

I know I'm not alone!

Zakk made a statement c/w Dime's funeral..something to the effect that he lost two heroes that day!

That's why I wanna beat his ass!

I think he was one of the three most inflential players in the world..Jimi / Ed / Yngwie..at least Jimi has an excuse..he dead!

Just kick Ed out of the classic line up and add Vai!

Write in that Classic VH formula..Dave and Mike is ALL about that..with a player like Vai..you can't lose !!!

Alex wouldn't do it tho..but who cares.

Smith/Bozzio/Bissenette/Travis would do a better job holding down the fort anywhoo..just nail Alex's snare sound..BOOM..classic VH!

If Not Vai..then Dweezil or Gilbert would be peachy...Dweez nails his ass!!

Actually, the best approximation would be for Michael Anthony to join the DLR band. That guitarist nails Ed's stuff to a tee and looks like he did 20 years ago. Plus Dave has a good rhythm guitarist too so those grooves go on when the solo comes up.

For those of you defending the current Ed, it's not like we hate Ed. It's the opposite; you watch your favorite brother or cousin fuck up on drink or drugs and go downhill,
at first it just hurts like hell. After awhile you get scar tissue on your heart and say, if they won't help themselves, fuggem. It's a survival trait, really. You can't just hold your heart out there to get continually hurt.

Ed's dad died as an alkie, so to him and Al, that's okay to do. To Val, and to many fans, it's not okay. She put upo with it for 20 years before she gave up on him, bless her heart. She had to protect her son, is my opinion on why she finally left.

So we love Ed, we're just tired of watching him kill himself
by degrees. His greatness is established, but it could have been so much more.
Ron is the MAN!!!!
