Re: Nevermore

"jeff loomis + steve smyth"

I been with Nevermore since their start..I seen all supporting guitarists in that camp..Smyth is very cool..but NOT the calibre of Jeff..

Tim Calvert was a BETTER match...I hit it off with Calvert..gave me his digits and shit, I gave him a badge..great guy and one amazing player.

Tim was the only guitarist that gave Jeff a real run for his money live..unfortunately "metal" at that time wasn't paying his bills..he's a commercial airline pilot..

Yes, Jeff is my boy...he's awesome!!

The NEW king of metal guitar..PERIOD!

I told him that 10 years ago..he thought I was nuts..

ok, first things first: jeff IS awesome

however, i think steve kicked jeff's ass all over the place on the "the psalm of lydia" lead tradeoff. steve's playing on that one just floors me, plus he wrote bittersweet feast as well as sell my heart for stones which are two AMAZING songs, definitely among my fave songs on that record. don't get me wrong, beyond within (a calvert song for the most part) is cool, but not as cool as these two songs (just as an example)

disclaimer: i haven't had the pleasure of seing them on any earlier tour than the EoR one, and therefore never saw them live with tim or pat.

nevertheless, when i saw them on the last two tours, both times steve was a BEAST. i found that on the latest tour jeff got much better as far as stage presence is concerned, but steve's just got IT. he's on FIRE. plus he's really beating the crap out of the strings without loosing control, and even in a muddy live mix you can hear the difference it makes.
i'm in no way shitting on jeff here, don't get me wrong, you won't believe how floored i was when jeff pulled off the TGE arps without any effort at all - i was standing 1ft away from him all night...i almost creamed my pants, seriously. however, in my book steve GAVE jeff a run for his money. not quite on par with jeff, but they're really pushing each other beyond anything metal has ever seen, which is always a great thing.

They're great players but most of Nevermore's music does nothing for me. I prefer the simpler rhythms of power metal

Re: Nevermore

Steve is a GREAT writer and player...but Jeff gave Stevie a spankin' live..I watched Steve prolly 20% of the show. Jeff's effortless and fire demands my attention.

The troy and etc..this stuff is too complex for some..it just goes over their heads...literally!

It's was a little too complex for me at first..it took some time adjusting to Nevermore's style, but when when it did take root..wow.

By the time I saw their first tour I was hooked and when I SAW Jeff play for the first time..I saw a new guitar god...I knew immediately he was a special dude.

Anything with Nevermore's name on it is quality stuff. I think that they are the most important band in metal out there right now.

Nevermore is one of the few bands these days that I'll go out and buy blindfold, knowing they'll amaze me anyway! They keep pushing the boundaries of metal IMHO, and that's a good thing...

I don't listen to Nevermore very often for the same reason that I don't listen to jazz very often. I know a pretty good amount about music theory and composition so I "get it" on an intellectual level. The players are talented and are doing something unique and innovative, but for me it is just not "fun" to listen to like say Whitesnake. I think I would like it better if they just played rhythms with higher notes too, a low Bb on guitar just doesn't sound great to me.

The being said, I do like the band, I just get more excited to here DragonForce straight up blazing on Fury of the Storm than Nevermore grooving on TGE. I do really like their more straightforward songs like The Heart Collector. I also REALLY like Jeff's leads and lead tone.

Summary: They deserve praise for doing something new and cool, but I don't think it's better than the old school stuff which gets my fists in the air.

I hear ya Troy...You are in the same comnany with alot of friends of mine..

They love powermetal, hell so do I...Dragonforce RULES..is their new one out yet..I haven't seen my Distros pick it up yet!

Hey I think you'd really dig Brainstorm, Edguy, Euroforce, Mystic Prophesy, Firewind, Symphorce, Rage, Jag Panzer and ect..very 80's styled writing but with a more "modern" sound..especially Brainstorm..they just ROCK!

My wife doesn't really like "power" metal anymore because it sounds too ummm.."old school" for her...now she loves Exodus, Nevermore, Biomechanical, Soilwork, In Flames, Lamb Of God, The Hauntede , Terror 2000 and etc.. and she LOVES Arch Enemy's music..she still don't like AE vocals tho..no matter how much I listen to it..: P

Angela of AE isn't doing anything different than Carcass..same EXACT style..just a chick!
