  • Changing opinion on players

Many years ago I totally hated Carlos Santana, every solo he did sounded all the same. The only song I dug was Black Magic Woman. He sickened me so much.
I liked his tone a lot tho.

A couple of years ago I didn't hated him anymore, his music was just something I didn't cared about.

But now I'm a HUGE fan, I even adopted some of his licks into my playing.

I've been a big fan of latin music all the time, it's funny that I started digging Santana's music just recently.

Any of you guys have had similar experiences with some player(s) ?

I guess he's not "evil" enough or somethin'...not bashing his abilities at all..just not my thing...

There is alot of very established players I just don't care for Eric Clapton is another one..I HATE anything Neil Young!!!

Prince and "The Boss" Bruce never pump my nads either..

and I was never a Stones fan..or the who..or the beatles.

I just became a Jimmy Page fan in the mid 90's..seriously!!

I don't expect everybody to like the crap I listen to either ..so there ya go..

I like his tone and his feel. I do think he is very repetitive and fairly sloppy. He also has a very limited "vocabulary" of phrasing. I do give him credit for consistancy though. He hasn't progressed as a guitar player since the early 70's.

He's a living legend and has written a ton of smash hit songs. I just don't think he's that great on guitar.

I agree man, his phrasing is limited.
I don't respect him as a guitar-god-soloist that much but he is pretty awsome writer and arranger. And he has worked together with tons of awsome musicians.

              Hey Bill! Whats happening bro!

Clapton is much better than what you hear on the radio. Versatile with fantastic tone. If you listened to his playing more you would undertstand what Slowhand really means. Its actually pretty cool and very accurate.

Bruce Springsteen is a story teller. Kind of a rock version of Bob Dillan. I'm not much of a fan of story tellers. He did write a ton of hits though.

Page is practically the son of God on guitar in regards to chops and writing. He is so far ahead of the normal curve of great guitar players its not even comprehendable.

Prince is a great musician and writer but is way overrated as a guitar player.

Keith Richards penned some of the coolest guitar licks and songs in history that are much harder to play than you think.

Neil Young has terrible tone, he's sloppy and there is virtually no creativity in his solo's. With that said.. he plays with tons of aggression and passion. Because of that... I am a huge fan of his. I saw him live with Pearl Jam and he singlehandedly blew them off of the stage.

I dig Santana, but he's an example of tone making the man. He was one of the first to make Mesa Boogie famous, and I remember seeing him live in the late 70s and he had beautiful tone! I think he is more of a meditative player than trying to be a chops hound anyway. Make a record with Mahavishnu John McLaughlin and you'd probably decide what's the use trying to top those chops? I think the fact a player like McLaughlin dug Carlos' playing enough to do a record with him probably mad him feel like he was on the right path. That was probably both blessing and curse. Blessing in the validation from a superior player, curse in the "I guess I'm good enough now" syndrome whioch leads to apathy and decline.

We also have to thank Carlos for Neal Schon and Greg Rolie aka Journey!

Oh, I hear ya John..Like I said I'm not bashing any of their abilities..they all have their own voice that can not be duplicated..I can understand why they're loved and rock icons.

but none of their writing or music personally moves me in the slightest...it just don't..I can't help that!

except Page..he's awesome IMO....he wrote some of the greatest solos and songs ever..you can sing his solos and they stuck in my noggin' in a good way..IMO.

I didn't like Zep when I was young because VH just came out..Ed got all my attention and I like Sabbath better because they were dark and "heavier"..it wasn't until like the 90's I really started to appreciate Jimmy Page..I listen to him all the time..

My dad likes Clapton/BB/Santana..It just doesn't do anything for me..They're great..it just doesn't do it for me...I can listen to it when I have to..

True, true, true. I do also think that many players gravitate towards Carlos because of his marketability. Everything he touches turns to gold and is listened to and revered. He also seems like the type of player who is not afraid of being "outplayed" on a record. He has always stayed true to form. Bottom line... if you want your playing heard or if you need some serious airtime... record something with Carlos.
                    The media loves him.
Remember when Jethro Tull beat Metallica in the heavy metal category?
I would think that if they had a hard rock guitar soloist category and
EVH, Vai, Malmsteen, Beck and Santana were nominees, Carlos would win by a landslide and he isn't even remotely considered hard rock.

I have always thought his biggest accomplishments were putting Mesa Boogie and PRS on the mainstream.

of corse Santana would win not because he is the best but EVERYONE knows him and that means the most in those stupid award shows.
But Santana has turned a lot of "normal" folks into guitar solos and that is a good thing.

Yngwie would NEVER win those awards, he tells everyone to fuck off and demands that somone puts those awards in their ass

To me Santana is a definite guitargod.

Saw him at the North Sea Jazz festival, two years ago I think, and it was nothing short of mindblowing.

And his toooooooone, used to be MB all the way baby 8)

Well, n ot everyone likes the same things! I think respect is being maintained here, people just stating their tastes. I don't really dig Neil's playing but I love some of his songs. Do I think his shit don't stink? No, but I have great respect for his writing. Springsteen, again, it just doesn't move me, but I respect the fact that he's moved so many others and is trying to say and do things relevant to the people.

Isn't this an improvement on how it would've played out a couple years ago?
