I never thought much of Santana until I was in a bar when I first turned 18 and a local cover band played Europa. That was really my first experience with a guitar instrumental. I was playing guitar for about 18 months then and RR, EVH, Maiden Dio, Rush, Priest were what I was playing but seeing that live and reaction of the crowd had a pretty big impact on me., so much so that my first cover band I played in I made sure to add that song to the list
I love melody and Carlos has it, he has a style that is easily recognizable. I only own one or 2 Carlos LPs but I really like his playing, sure he's not metal shredder but he is a great player and has a great sense of melody and that is what attracts me to any form of music. I think the lack of melody is what keeps me from a lot of the metal stuff people here rave about...lack of melody = not music, for me anyways.
