yea, i've already said it in various other threads, but fuggit, i'll say it again:
******BUY THIS ALBUM******
it kicks so much ass that it definitely deserves it's own thread. forget all you know about kataklysm, this album is so much better that their older work it's almost scary. serenity in fire wasn't a bad album by any means, but it sounds like a bunch of 14yr olds playing in their first garage band when compared to in the arms of devastation.
for anyone who's not familar with them, imagine it like this: take the swedish melodic death metal (the good stuff, not the recent N*FLAYMZ faggot shit ), add in some modern groove a la machine head, and mix it with kataklysms "hyperblast" stuff which is what they got famous for, and you have an idea what this album sounds like.
i gotta say that there's hardly any hyperblast stuff left, though, it's mostly groove and high mid tempo riffage with some thrash thrown in, and mixed with the swede style harmony work. in fact, the title track has a distinct hypocrisy vibe
in my book, it's a 9,5/10. there are exactly two things that i don't like about this record: the awful guitar solo in open scars (and awful it is....), and in words of desperation which is a good song, but not *quite* as good as the other ones on this record, especially due to the breakdown.
the production is also great for kataklysm standarts, although it's no andy sneap/neil kernon work, and you can hear it. the drum sound is way better than anything sneap has done so far, though....i just hate the typical andy sneap kickdrum sound, but that's just me....way too clicky without enough oooomph imho. one interesting thing about the guitar sound is that they sounded EXACTLY like on this cd when i saw them a few weeks ago.
