  • kataklysm - in the arms of devastation

yea, i've already said it in various other threads, but fuggit, i'll say it again:

    ******BUY THIS ALBUM******

it kicks so much ass that it definitely deserves it's own thread. forget all you know about kataklysm, this album is so much better that their older work it's almost scary. serenity in fire wasn't a bad album by any means, but it sounds like a bunch of 14yr olds playing in their first garage band when compared to in the arms of devastation.
for anyone who's not familar with them, imagine it like this: take the swedish melodic death metal (the good stuff, not the recent N*FLAYMZ faggot shit ), add in some modern groove a la machine head, and mix it with kataklysms "hyperblast" stuff which is what they got famous for, and you have an idea what this album sounds like.
i gotta say that there's hardly any hyperblast stuff left, though, it's mostly groove and high mid tempo riffage with some thrash thrown in, and mixed with the swede style harmony work. in fact, the title track has a distinct hypocrisy vibe

in my book, it's a 9,5/10. there are exactly two things that i don't like about this record: the awful guitar solo in open scars (and awful it is....), and in words of desperation which is a good song, but not *quite* as good as the other ones on this record, especially due to the breakdown.

the production is also great for kataklysm standarts, although it's no andy sneap/neil kernon work, and you can hear it. the drum sound is way better than anything sneap has done so far, though....i just hate the typical andy sneap kickdrum sound, but that's just me....way too clicky without enough oooomph imho. one interesting thing about the guitar sound is that they sounded EXACTLY like on this cd when i saw them a few weeks ago.

Very cool, thanks for the review. I'm a long time fan, but just haven't gotten around to ordering it yet (none of the stores here have it). Spent all my spare $$$ on the new Darkane, Children Of Bodom and Ensiferum CDs, so it's got to wait until payday.

I've always loved JF's guitar tone. How is it on this album compared with their other stuff?

This CD kicks ass, I love Turns To Rust the most just because of that groove they've got going on, but I love the whole album

GREAT. serenity in fire has a kinda "digital" sounding guitar sound, and shadows and dust also isn't nearly as good as the new one. it was mastered by tue madsen (sp?), and you can hear it. it's not a wall of sound, but a very heavy thrash tone that's not overprocessed, very in your face.

"fragle, do you have an mp3 link to where i can taste a bit of this kataklysm stuff? You've hyped it so much, i have to check it out."
i dunno, i'll try to find some downloadable mp3. all i've found so far is a crappy nuclear blast demo of crippled&broken, which has this weird sound thing going on. well, otherwise i'll just upload a short sample of one song.
in case you wanna check out the nuclear blast thing, here you go:
          http://www.nuclearblast.de/media/NB_1527.ram
the left channel seems to be the "proper" mix, but the right channel and the drums are fucked up.

actually, it took me a lot of time to really appreciate most of serenity in fire, including ambassador of pain. now i think it's killer, tho....

the bonus dvd it's HILARIOUS....the drunk (but smokin ) chick that falls right into JF's guitar rig during blood on the swans...of course, i'd be pretty pissed if something like that happened to me (well, in case i won't end up in bed with her after the show, that is ), but from a spectators point of view i think it's funny as hell

Jah Fragle, my german freund, i've been listening to them for a couple of days now. Thanks to Irfaan!

I actually like them! I'm not a huge fan of the style, but i dig the two tracks i got. Good drive, good songs, good death metal gtr sound, nice smeagol vocals in It Turns To Rust And i hear nice Invocator grind in Like Angels Weeping.

That said, i'm a small producer and sound engineer and therefore i'm "cursed" with a critical ear too: the guitars are not tight and they HAVE to be that considering the style of music. The drum sound is very sterile and flat, due to mediocre drum replacement, where the snare and kick drums are replaced entirely by drum samples (i think). Normally you would leave a bit of the original drums in the mix to help remove that robot drum sound, but maybe they recorded with triggers only. Funny too that the drums are panned "wrong" (Left<->Right). There's no true gtr solos and where's the bass gtr? Maybe it's meant to be that way.

Don't take this too seriously - i'm just brainstorming. As i said, buttom line i actually like the two tracks

They have basically dropped a lot of blast beats and slowed down, and added some fat trendy breakdowns. Some of the riffing is pretty good, the drums are much more straightforward as well. But I think they still have the same problems they have always had: the vocals are weak, and there are only a few standout moments on their albums: a riff here a riff there, without a lot of musical depth. Crippled and Broken and Turns to Rust sound to me like the same kind of mid tempo 4/4 stuff Carcass was writing when they decided to throw in the extreme metal towel.

there's a guest vocalist on it turns to rust and yeah, like angels weeping rocks hard, although i don't quite see the invocator influence you're mentioning but then again, i only have weave the apocalypse, and know a few other songs but no other full record.
" the guitars are not tight and they HAVE to be that considering the style of music"
really? i thought the playing was pretty tight. there are a few timing issues especially at the end of like angels weeping, but i thought this was some kind of editing error, because the whole band is delayed rather than just the guitar(s).
" The drum sound is very sterile and flat,"
i'm not exactly a big fan of the snare, either, but i like the kickdrum. not as clicky as andy sneap's stuff, but still enough of that "trigger sound" to cut through blazin guitars - one of my main gripes with e.g. the haunted-made me do it. the kickdrum sounds great during slow passages, but is totally drowned out during the uptempo stuff.
"Funny too that the drums are panned "wrong" (Left<->Right). "
that's a matter of preference really.....i bet that 99% of the folks out there won't even notice anyways
                              " There's no true gtr solos "
word....but then again, JF can't play leads worth shit
                              "where's the bass gtr? "
                              good question

interesting.....i don't think these sound ANYTHING like carcass, but then again, i'm not exactly a big fan of carcass....
