    Holy shit Steve thanks man!!

The wife and I were just listening to this exact performance..I only have the "Legends of Rock" audio cd...it's great to actually watch these guys jam.

Uli is so cool, he just lays back and lets Mike do his thing..he doesn't try to outplay him..just a great respectful trade off.. that's class!!!!!

Put Yngwie in the mix and it's suddenly the Yngwie show...don't get me wrong I love YJM and have all his stuff including a cd I paid friggin $45 for..I guess you can say I'm a fan..

But he doesn't posess that articulate, emotional "feel"..like Uli has with dynamics and restraint..IMO..

Uli make EVERY note count..Yngwie takes notes for granted.. and repeats himself a hell of a lot...but he is certainly a great player that derserve his due!!

I can't waite till Saturday the 13th...I'm there!!!

Can't waite to show Val the vids..thanks alot man..!!!

Uli just makes it look so easy..and he plays with his eyes closed most of the time..he plays just with his ears

I dedicated a thread to Uli a couple years ago..no vids..just lots of praise ..just sharing some joy..

    here it is..

    Thanks again Steve!!!

I'm a bit dissappointed by Schenker in this video. He doesn't seem to be into it at all. Uli on the other hand seems to hold back quite a bit. That is impressive... its respect.

I live in the Detroit area. I'm seriously contemplating making the trip to Cleveland to see Uli...

Oh Mike is fine..that's how anyone would sound next to Uli...even when he is taking it easy on you..

Put Eddie Van Halen next to Uli..back when Ed had a functioning brain..that would be a massacre too..

Neither of those guys seem to be at the top of their games in this clip.

As for saying Uli is better than Schenker, well that's a matter of opinion. Roth has always been a hero of mine and a huge inspiration, but man, Schenker is just so easy to listen to. His tone has always been better than Uli's and ,to my ears, he has a much better vibrato.

Roth is all over him in these clips but neither was playing their best.

I'd put EVH, in his prime, up against anyone at anytime. Think about Fair Warning Eddie and Taken By Force Uli sharing the stage - your jaw would be dislocated by the end of the set.

I am a fan of both Schenker and Roth. Schenker did alot of "search" for the note technique during his solo. A truly great player can pull off grabbing the bad notes and turning them into something good. Michael did a great job of demonstrating this technique. You JCF'rs who have been playing for a long time know EXACTLY what I am talking about.

Uli... on the other hand. Masterful. Every single note was perfection. The mood of his playing? Perfect. The tone? Perfect. Could he have blown Schenker off the stage? Of course.. but thats not Uli's style. He was humble, gracious and a true pro.
It just doesn't get any better than Uli Jon Roth. Video after video proves it. I have over an hour of Uli on video from the early 80's. I watch it when I start to think I am actually good on guitar. It brings me back to reality. When compared to the Master Uli Jon Roth... we guitar players are all just mortals.

Another thing that you guys have to remember is that Uli Jon Roth is an idol and inspiration to most of the guitar players you mention.
Eddy, Yngwie, Schenker, Rhoads, Lynch, Macalpine etc...
Uli's influences include Pagannini, Vivaldi and Hendrix. Those 3 influences completely explain Uli's style.
To me he has always been the neo-classical Hendrix of our time. He is the only neo-classical shredder that plays with that kind of emotion. He also knows how to turn it up or down onstage. Call it restraint. Its very difficult to do when you have the ability to rip 18 notes per second on a 37 fret guitar. That is the only complaint I have with Yngwie. He tends to repeat passages alot. Why??? Because he "shoots his load" during every guitar solo and there is really nothing else but to repeat classic Yngwie riffs during a solo. Tony Macalpine is much better at being more interesting without being repetitive.
Uli has a vastly different approach. Its more like Hendrix. Although he is playing mainly in the standard neo-classical style he adds a freestyle feeling to it very similar to the way Hendrix played.

Amen..he is the guitarist's guitarist..there is none like him..his talent remains unchallenged by NO mortal!

                    Hail Uli Jon Roth..

                    Very well said John!!

                      +10,000!!!

I just saw Yngwie in concert on Saturday (not for the first time, I might add), and this EXACTLY describes what his live playing is like. The guy is probably the best double-picker alive (Shawn Lane might have been the best rock double-picker ever), but jeezus, he really does play the same shit over and over. And his rhythm-guitar playing sucks in concert. To me, it's really disrespectful to both his band members and to his own fucking songs to play shitty rhythm guitar like that--really sloppy and careless from a guy who can certainly do better.

Seeing Uli Roth last year was a religious experience, by comparison, and I'm stoked about seeing this tour. Uli might not have that final ounce of double-picking ability that Yngwie does, but he's always playing music rather than endlessly demonstrating his ability.

BTW, I don't think comparing Roth and Schenker is really all that valid, apart from the Scorpions connection, since they have such different styles and intent. You might as well compare Al DiMeola and B.B. King.

True... Schenker and Roth have very different playing styles and tone.

Seeing Roth is a religious experience for me too.

I'm a fan of Schenker but by judging from the part one...he doesn't deserve to be on he same stage as Uli...they are miles apart in both abilities and tone

Michael really looks aweful in that video. The outfit, the facial hair and he looks fat. The black leather with the shorts just isn't working for me "dog".
