I agree with all of the above..

    so +1000 for me too..

Val and I will be seeing Uli on the 13th..if I can score an autograph..John G has one coming..because I KNOW he loves and appreciates Uli as much as I do..

There isn't a mortal alive that comes close to Uli..IMO.

I know and hear ALOT of players..you name 'em..I got 'em..

Mike looked like shit when I saw him on the Arachnophobiac tour..he looked like ass..but was on his game..

He's a truly gifted player..one of the greats..but Uli is untouchable..

For the new breed I'm partial to Jeff Loomis...but that's apples to oranges.

Ahh, come on Bill.....bullshit. The only guy that smoked Ed off the stage was Holdsworth...and who the hell could jam with him? I can barely follow the "music" when I listen to it....let alone play with that freak.

If Uli stuck to Ed's forte', which would have been wacky rock with a bluesy basis, Ed would have been just fine. Even if he felt like going neo-classical, Ed could have kept up with pedal point tapping and the whatnot.

Nobody, with the exception of SRV and Hendrix has an attack like Eddie in his prime.

I did really enjoy this video though. I guess I am just different as I don't get a super-woody from Uli as of yet. I still get chills listening to the solo from Push Comes to Shove though...and I have been listening to it since I was 11 years old.

EVH is a god when it comes to playing 80's style blues based party rock. The further he gets from that, the worse off he is.

I love Ed's guitar work and songwriting, but I would hate to see him get on stage with the likes of Uli or Schenker for a jam, even in his heyday. It would be an embarrassment IMO.

Eddie would have smoked Schenker's ass in his prime.

Come on Jimmy...I need some help bro!!! :ROTF:

              Uli is a master musician..

Eddie, who was my hero made me pick up guitar..well he revolutionized the whole over the top shred thing..and his tone was the shit!!

I was a dedicated EVH fanatic..

As I listened and discovered more and more players Ed slowing lost his luster with me..

              Uli gets BETTER with age..

Example ..Jeff Loomis can learn any VH song or Ed lick note for note without effort..Ed could NOT touch any of Loomis's licks and songs...this is fact!

You can apply that to Paul Gilbert/Vai/Satch//the list goes on..

But alot of these players would not be around if it wern't for Ed..

Don't worry Mike and Jimmy..Ed is immortalized ..even before death..he will be held in the exact same regaurd as Jimi with some folks..possibly even much higher...especially when he's gone!

In the big picture of rock guitar..as far as technical ability, feel and musical virtuocity..it's ALL Uli...then I would say Vai!

I do prefer Ed over Mike..Mike is awsome but he just didn't kick my nads like Ed did..

              BUT..Mike maintained his skills..

              Uli is a different story..

I feel strange saying bad things about someone of Ed's stature, but let's face it... all the techniques he uses to great effect in "his" music sound gimmicky when used in any other format.

I'm a big fan of Ed's guitar work, so I don't want it to look like the ever popular EVH bash fest we see so often lately. I just think Uli and Schenker are much better musicians, especially in the soloing department.

I think Yngwie, if he is on his game, can wipe the stage with Vai...and I love Vai. Vai is a superior MUSICIAN, with incredible technique and amazing range...but Yngwie is a fucking machine....an albeit, limited machine.

Of course, there are so many guys out there...ever see Tuck Andres? That guy is sick, he plays like 5 different parts on the guitar at once. What about Steve Morse...that was an amazing show.

It is all a matter of what touches YOU. What touches me, is a groove..and TONE. There is no argument that Eddie has the greatest rock TONE of all time....Eric Johnson is close though.

Now the Yngwie / Vai thing is a tough call..both are amazing and have their own voice..one could not replace the other...even tho one did.

what makes Yngwie special and important is that he brought neo-classic shred to the masses..even tho Uli did it much earlier..Yngwie got everyone sweepin' and a shreddin!!!

Yep... the Yngwie vs Vai thing is tough. Vai is the master of technique's and tricks and his chops are just amazing. I think he lacks as a writer though. I consider most of his songs guitar gymnastics.
Vai also demonstrates many styles, tones and techniques and continues to push the envelope of guitar playing. He has great courage.

Malmsteen hasn't changed much in the last 20+ years. He was incredible then. He's incredible now. IMHO... you don't have to change or evolve or push the envelope to be considered great. With the chops Malmsteen has and the things he can do on a 21 fret guitar with no locking trem he is truly remarkable. Sometimes his licks don't even sound possible to play.

They are both great and VERY different.
If I had to base my sole opinion on who is better after seeing them both onstage for G3 I would say that Malmsteen is better. Better tone, better chops, better everything. If you watch the G3 video closely you will see the looks on Joe and Steve's faces when Yngwie is playing. Shock and awe. He's a freak of nature on the guitar. The only player on the planet with that kind of control is the master himself. The one who has no equal. The one who inspired many of the best shredders in the world. The one who was shredding in the neo-classical style when The Beatles were still together!!!! ULI JON ROTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have seen parts of G3 when Satch, Vai and Yngwie were all on stage and you can clearly, as JG pointed out, see the shock on Vai and Satch's faces when Yngwie is motoring. I just think he destroyed them in terms of sheer ferocity and delivery of incredible licks.

I think in terms of that style, Yngwie has no peers. He does not know the word restraint.

I love Uli, but at times he is a bit pretentious about his abilities.
I mean, he's a great shred pioneer, Jimi clone etc., yet he puts on record abortions like his rendition of Recuerdos de la Alhambra for 2 guitars????

Any intermediate classical guitar student MUST learn that piece, and its whole point as a tremolo study, but the challenge is to play it with 1 guitar!
