all these comparisons are silly, you'll like who YOU like.

that being said, I don't get much from Uli's playing. he lacks feel and flow if you ask me.

that was an off-night for Schenker, but he has the feel, flow and tone that I see Uli lacking.

      it's all just personal opinion.
the guitar players look damaged - they've been outcasts all their lives

...Well I'll try John..but this is never easy..

Lets just say that "taste" is very subjective..there is people who do not like Vai..do not like Satch..do not like Uli..think Randy is overrated..some think Yngwie is a redundant wanker..don't like Loomis..some still proclaim that Jimi was the best guitaris that ever lived..some think that of Page..or Beck..jeez I can go on all day..but I think you guys know where I'm going with this ..

No matter what you like or don't like is inconsequential..but important to that individual..

It's all about inspiration..it's what set the standards of the goals you attempt to achieve..all the above mentioned players are benchmarks..

Some think Ed is going to make a huge comeback and regain his throne..you know I wished that would happen..but I'm a cynical bastid...because he';s the reason I'm even here.

In my 25+ years of searchig for the best tone and players to inpire me..I discovered alot of players..some you guys never heard of..

If you would asked me 15 years ago who THE best guiatrist was I would say Eddie without a blink of an eye..of course I loved others players..anyone that would kick my nads really..the well knowns and the unsung heroes that I dug up from the underground..

You guys saw my list of favorite players..it covered alot of ground..ground that some of you never heard of..

Now they say hindsight is always 20/20 and this is true..

Now with that said..in the big picture of things Uli was really ahead of his time..he played from his heart for himself..he followed his heart and didn't care what was popular..otherwise he would have stayed on board with The Scorpions..and conformed to radio friendly songs..

Uli is a quirky dude..and writes some quirky tunes..and he sings aweful IMO..but if you like the man's style or not and all quirks aside..you can NOT deny his abilties as a true virtuoso..that hasn't wiltered with age like so many other great players..in fact he honed his skills...and he does his way..it may not be marketable nor popular..but it's his music..he wrote some of the best solos ever recorded..and inspired so many monster players that you guys do worship..like Yngwie/ Freidman and etc..

Uli writing style is NOT for everyone..but when he goes into his solo..he plays from the heart and makes every note count..and he can evoke more emotiom that any player alive..IMO..

My wife of 20 years prolly knows about more players than most of you just thru being with me..we have been together since early 1984..we have seen Ed/Vai/YJM/Zakk/Steve Stevens/Nuno/Gilbert/Gary Moore/John sykes/George Lynch/Jake E Lee/Reb Beech/Harry Cody/Eric Johnson/Satch/Greg Howe/Gilbert and so on..hell she seen and heard them all..

The ONLY player that evokes a goosebump from my wife is Uli..yeah, my wife hates his voice..yeah he writes some quirky music..but when he plays..it's electric..energy she doesn't get from any other players..no matter how good they are..

She really used to love Gary Moore when he did that whole blues thing..but now it's about Uli with her.

I'm taking her on the 13th to see him..if it were any other player she wouldn't care a less..she took a vacation day just to see him..so I'm committed to take her..

I just seen Michael Schenker not long ago..I seen him about 4 times now..He was great as always ..he looked like hell..but who cares the guy was on his game..on the arachnapobiac tour..he ceratainly was on his game..but not one goosebump..

That job is for Uli..only he can do that for me and mine..and we heard them all..

you can NOT like Uli's stuff, that's fine..but you can not deny his abilty..same goes for Vai..he writes some VERY quirky stuff that I don't like..but the guy is a monster..I can't deny that..

In Bill Z's world.. Uli is number 1..period..and for the new breed of metal it is Jeff Loomis..he inspires me just as Ed did back in the day..

what else can I say really..yes we can't all like the same things ..that would be boring..but you can't deny greatness..greatness is undeniable..and Uli is truly one of the greats..to me he's the greatest.

But those are my convictions..and that will not change.

horn and all you weedily-wangily jabronis, I have two words for you:

            Mel effin Bay.

Do NOT deny the greatness of the Mel. What guitarist do you know can go from religious campground tunes to fern bar fingerpicked jazz, whip out some Deliverance inspired banjo pluckin, throw down a mean Hawaiian ukelele that would make Don Ho commit suicide with the tiny umbrella from his watered down Mai Tai, and then turn around in a blink of an eye and shred with brutal and vicious licks as brought to you in the seminal classic "Learn To Burn With Mel Bay".

Vai? Please, go do more 10 hour practices. EVH? Not even after 15 beers. Yngwie? More like Yahweh Manglestein. Your vaunted Uli? What mushroom did you just fall off?

Mel Bay is God. Resistance is futile. You know it.

Available at fine music stores everywhere, in the sheet music section.

ALL HAIL THE KING!!!! Rock it dude!

OK, I cand appreciate and ackwoledge your foundness of the abilties of Mel Bay..well who couldn't..

But why is it cool..to slam other great established players..

I could slam Mel and say ..ah that's old fart BS, who cares...it's not my cup of tea ..as is Les Paul ..but I can't deny their acheivements, greatness, abilities and influence..

Now my question for you Tex.. why can't you return that same respect and acknowledge the modern greats that were sown by the likes of such pioneers....

I'm guessing Mel Bay humor just doesn't have the same kick in 2006 as it had in 1986.

I thought he was serious too Bill. Now that I read his post back its some really funny shit.

Your Uli explaination was spot on. The only part I differ from you on is that 15 years ago I still thought Uli was a god, actually as far back as 25 years ago and he was shredding neo-classical excellence 10 years prior!!

They are both great and VERY different.
If I had to base my sole opinion on who is better after seeing them both onstage for G3 I would say that Malmsteen is better. Better tone, better chops, better everything.
Without a doubt. I like Vai and Satch anyway but Malmsteem is exactly described above. I saw it live and I have the DVD and you can go back and see it over and over. Better tone and better chops. I don't know why Vai and Stach continue to play Ibanez.... hehehehehehehehehe!

I think that some people overlook just how awesome Malmsteen's guitar tone is. Every aspect of it is perfect. You really can't hear any distortion. Its so clear it almost sounds clean. He really has his signature tone nailed because he ALWAYS sounds great. I also think that a large percentage of his tone comes from his fingers. Same thing with Uli. Its an unmistakeable super clear Marshall tone. It makes you instantly think of a wall of slaved Marshalls.

If Uli comes close to New Orleans, I will go. Does anyone know if he has plans to come down here?

As far as getting goosebumps from watching someone.......

Let me see, when I saw SRV at his last JazzFest, the hair on the back of my neck stood up. Even though it was outside...it was magic. Even my non-guitar playing friends were floored....

The first time I saw Eric Johnson, which was at The Bayou in DC, in 1989, I stood there with my mouth agape for 45 minutes. I had never heard tone like that in my life. I knew right then and there that I would always have a critical eye when it came to guitar tone. I don't care if your chops are unreal, if your tone sucks...so do you.

Frank Marino did that to me a couple of years ago at a small club in Montreal. I was within eight feet of him and he just blew me away with his tone, touch, feel....you name it.

I've had a similar experience with Rik Emmitt from Triumph. Back in 1999 I saw him in a very small club playing solo with a backing track. There were, at most, fifty people in the club. It wasn't just his playing that killed me. His voice was unreal that night in that small space. I had chills every time he went to his upper register - he blew me away.

After that first show at The Bayou, Eric played at Manny's on Broadway...in Baltimore the very next night. I dragged a girl I knew out there and saw that show as well. Manny's was about as big as a broom closet and didn't have an elevated stage. I stood NEXT to Eric during the whole set. I was, at most, 5-6 feet away. He probably thought I was some kind of freak...because I didn't even notice that I brought a cute girl with me who obviously dug me...I just stared at him with a flabergasted look on my face...and laughed from time to time while shaking my head in disbelief.

I had a similar reaction later that year when I saw Danny Gatton for the first time.
