  • Metallica still kicks ass!!!

Hey guys, just stepped in to say hi and give you my review of Metallica's concert. So here it goes.

It was very hot and sunny Tuesday. I went to the train station after the second Estonian JCF member Oliver (JC_Denton) he was with his drummer Kaido. They came from Tartu. We hang out in Tallinn, drank and ate and then went to the concert ground wich is near by the beach and while we were going to the concert place we were checkin' out girls' asses who were tanning.

So we entered to the Song Festival Ground wich is a huge place. No cameras and shit wasn't allowed. Luckly my brother sold official Merch. (shirts etc.) there so he took the camera and gave to me when I was in.

Saw tons of old friends there, tons of chicks too.
There was 78000 people wich is the solo concert (non-festival) record in Estonia. 30000 of them were from the other countries because it was the only Metallica's gig in North Europe. There were people from Finland, Sweden, Norway, Latvia, Lithuania etc.
The foreign fans were hittin' on Estonian girls very intensly

When the show started everyone split up and rushed to the front of the stage.

The first opening bands were local.

The first one was Pedigree who are industrial metal pioneers here, and also huge thrash fans. The were pretty ok.

The second one was one of the biggest local rock bands The Sun, they are decent but I don't really dig 'em and they didn't fit to that concert.

The last opener was Bullet For My Valentine from Wales (UK). The lead guitar player was playing with Dave Mustaine's signature ESP V8 and two Mesa Boogie 3 channel rectifiers (Triples I think) with two Mesa traditional size straight cabs. The lead singer/rhythm player was using a white reverse headstock Jackson Rhoads and a black Rhoads, both with string-thru bridge. He was using two Peavey 6505 heads and two Mesa traditional straight cabs. The sound was pretty good, drums were pretty massive too (some kind of white Pearl kit).

Their playing was pretty clean. But the band is booring as hell, some kind of modern thrash/heavy/metalcore metal stuff, I would never listen to them on a record. Riffs, leads and songwriting is booring. Their cookie monster vocals are horrible and when they sing clean parts, then they suck even more. But I could bare them in live, I even moshed a little bit to warm up.

I give them credit for being fans of 80's rock (Motley Crue, G'N'R etc.).

    Now the main thing.

First I gotta say that the crowd was very wild in front of the stage. There were a lot of wrestling, beating, fist fights etc. People threw each other with water cups. I was so fucking wet. Some folks were beaten pretty badly, they were bleeding on the other people.

Luckly there was a cool "system", the security guards gave a lot of water to the people to drink and hosed us too. Also when somone couldn't bare all that rumble anymore, the others carried them to the security guards and they led them to more quieter place. It was pretty cool.
I was one of the very few who could take pictures of the show (thanks to my brother) but it was a very difficult job because of the rumble. Some pictures are kinda foggy because of that.

Ok, Metallica was FUCKING AWSOME!!! I think they practiced very hard before the tour. They nailed everything PERFECTLY. And they did it with EASE. Even Kirk was dead on when he was playing solos, his vibrato is still out of tune tho. Lars was a monster, he has so much power. And Rob is easily the best bass player Metallica ever had as far as skill and stage presence is concerned. He was cool as hell. I think Metallica's gig is too easy for him tho. He is used to play some crazy funk slapping stuff with Suicidal Tendencies and Infectious Groove. All the band members are great showmen, they were all over the stage. And they had so much fun too. I was amazed that James' voice was pretty good.

    Here is the setlist:

    Creeping Death
    Fuel
    Wherever I May Room
    For Whom The Bell Tolls
    Fade To Black
    Battery
    Master Of Puppets
The Thing That Should Not Be
    Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
    Disposable Heroes
    Leper Messiah
    Orion
    Damage Inc.
    Sad But True
    Nothing Else Matters
    One
    Enter Sandman
    So What
    Seek & Destroy

Since when they had such a badass set? Since when they played the WHOLE Master Of Puppets album live? Unbelieavable.
I think it's pretty hard to nail all the riffs down stroking exlusively on tempos 200 bpm and up.
When they played Nothing Else Matters, half of the crowd was in tears and there were A LOT of people who light their lighters. It was beautiful.
Durning So What, all the opening bands' members were on the stage with Metallica and sang along.
The concert ended with the classic Seek & Destroy.
The band was very happy and threw a lot of picks and sticks to the crowd.

The sound was probably the best I've ever heard in a rock concert. Metallica is the best sounding metal band live and in the studio in my opinion. Lars' drum sound was godlike, specially his kick drums. So powerful and yet dynamical and warm.
Rob used 3 vintage SVT type ampeg heads with eight 4x10 cabs. Also there was a Mesa Boogie Recto stack in his rig.
His sound was very distorted, in a good way, great tube overdrive sound wich would probably suck for jazz but in Metallica it sounds powerfull. I think some of the distortion came from the Boogie head.
James was using two Triple Rectifiers with two Mesa traditional straight cabs and a Roland Jazz Chorus for cleans. Kirk was using three Triple Rectifiers with four Mesa traditional straight cabs. Their tone was AWSOME. Probably the best metal tone I've heard in a concert. It was powerfull, clear and crunchy.
I didn't see mics on the cabs, maybe they used some special Direct systems.

The sound was amazing but in some places directly in front of the speakers, the sound was muddy and the bass was too loud according to the people who were there.

JC had a micro heart attack beacuse of the monstrous bass range. The doctors wanted to give him an electric shock or something, but he luckly woke up before. He can tell about what happened himself, I didn't see him when the bands were playing. He is ok now, but after the show he was feeling pretty sick.

When the concert was over, tens of thousands walked together to the center of the city. It was amazing.

I hooked up with some chicks from Finland, went to their hotel room and got laid. Then went to home.

    Here are my pics:

    http://www.hot.ee/metallica06tallinn/

On the first pic is JC (left), with drummer Raido (right)
On the 4th and 5th pic from below, JC is recovering from the micro heart attack and his girlfriend is comforting him.

The first time Metallica was here in 1998, they were awsome then, but now they just destroyed.

It was one of the best shows I've ever seen

Jesus Christ..now THAT is what I call METAL. "I had a heart attack at the Metallica concert...it was the BASS MAN!!!"

I am glad he is OK.

Sounds like a kick ass show!!!

    Mike
Sleep. The sound doesn't collapse to riffs of early eyes either.

Great Review Endrik!!!. I will add my feelings here, cause luckily i am STILL ALIVE!!!

First off , i saw Metallica 7 years ago , my father had bought me a ticket for my 15th birthday , actually i even did\nt care at that time . After the concert it was my all time favorite band. I started playing guitar, metal, fusion , prog metal, rock. 2004 i quit university to learn guitar 24/7 ,still doing it*before that metallicas show i was a skater and had learnt 7 year martial arts*So i quit doing all that. And my biggest dream was to see Metallica again -the band that had such and impact on my life, i wanted to go to their show as the biggest fan (not like the first time , when i dint know their names).

SO 7 years later , 2006 , i got my ticket to another Metallica show. 75000 tickets were sold out in few days . Was lucky to even get one.

So as Endrik described we met in Tallinn , and just had some fun before the show. So it was time for metallica to hit the stage, Drum tech hit the bass drum couple of times, the sound was huge ,very very powerful . It took about an hour and half , till the stage was ready for metallica, i felt really good , and then the first notes of Ecstasy Of Gold sounded, i was humming along and knew that the boys will hit the stage in a minute. They Hit the Stage with Creeping Death , i dont have the right words to describe what i was feeling, just i couldn't believe what i saw, the guys who had changed my lif3 , my heroes , on stage right in form of me with all that greatness and extreme power , all these years that i had been waiting for them to come back. You know i am guy who never cries , actually i remember only one time when i cry ed that was when Dimebag got killed. but i could\nt help my self i started crying like a little girl and collapsed, and there i was on the ground crying, my ex girlfirend trying to solace me(she had never seen me like that) . then i stood up tears still in my eyes , and started running towards the stage like a madman while singing along from the bottom of my and as loud as i could( i wasn't drunk at all , i only had had a few beers ) . I did\nt care of my firends i did\nt care of anything or anybody , it was my moment it was my day. James looked very cool , rocking in front of me , the face that he had on, dude played with great feeling , he that power in him , he totally owned crowed. By the end of the first song i was about 10 feet form stage , and you know what, it was really fucking loud ,i don't know if Metallica boys have any idea what it is like to be in front of the speakers at their own show.lol The bass started killing my heart, totally controlling my heartbeat, i didnt care and sang louder and louder, and my heart did\nt get enough oxygen( at last this is what i was told later on by docs) , i was avoiding the pain all over in my chest . While struggling to get even closer to the stage the pain started to take control over me . I wasnt myself i was like a starving animal , who is trying to get closer to the meat. For all the fans it was time to begin enjoying mMaster of Puppets album live , but form me it was time to get carried by gourds to medical tent . Started to loose my vision , and then i saw that the doc had but the electric shock machine on to my chest, and was ready to push it , i was like no , please now , fortunately he did\nt use it . then they did a lot of heart tests and said the i had micro heart attack , and my heart is pumping like it was a rabbits heart .lol He gave me really good medication and told me to lay down 20 minutes. there was some other patient besides my who looked liked he was dead , was puking the only thing that he said was METALLICA.lol.Also i saw there many guys with bleeding nose. i listened to master of puppets and sang along .layed down about 10 minutes and left the tent. One on my Friends who saw me, said to me later that i looked like a zombie. I returned to the front line , just took some brakes form screaming , so my heart could rest a bit. Hammett was right infront of me , and since i was the tallest in that area and aslo sent him a lot of air kisses(lol) i got a nice eye contact and he smiled and pointed his finger right on me -it felt awesome. Aslo one of the highlight was , when i was close to some real fan form Sweden , and he aslo knew all the lyrycs and we screamed the lyrics into each others face. James\es jokes made the crowd lought me included. They looked really pleased with the concert , and when they had finished playing the last song Seek And Destroy, all the band members said thank you , and it seemed that they really meant it .

Sound was great , playing was tight > Hetfields voice is gotten better, Hammett knows how to play his solos , Lars and Rob were great too .

It was the best Day of my life.

If you can , then go to this tour , the set is killer.

Finally another one who dares admit Metallica is still awesome live. Lotsa people might not like their latest work, but live these motherfuckers are HUGE!

Metallica's now the biggest selling act ever in Estionia. 72000 people were in attendance at Talinn that night. So you were making history while rocking out, Endrik!
Thanks shitloads for the pictures too! I collect them, these are an awesome addition.

I've been to a lot of Metallica shows now already (following them around on their European tour next year, probably, just hitting the road in a friend's car with some guys, we split the gas, follow the tour and see where the rest takes us). I've been against the rail pretty much everytime and actually had my ribs bruised quite badly once from being squashed, but fuck it, nothing beats standing in front of Hetfield himself, The God Of Rhythm. (there now you know where my name comes from! hehe)

My number one band of all time for sure.

Concerning the gear. The onstage gear is for looks purely (except maybe for Rob's, not sure about that).

At certain points in the tour they'll have as many as 40 triple rectifiers with them (with 2 cabs per 2 triple rectifiers, stacked on top), just for looks on stage.

Their sound goes through their racks (backstage), triaxis, Diezel VH4 for James, Roland JC120 for cleans (along with Triaxis), g majors for effects, etc etc. Fridge sized racks.

Hey man, I looked thorugh ALL those pictures for naked Finnish chix and found none!!

I saw Metallica live a few years ago, and while the crowd was a bunch of pussies the set list was pretty solid and they sounded good. I'll give them that much.

Cool reviews, guys! Sounds like an awesome time! After this reaction, maybe Tallica will get it together for the next album....St Anger will be a distant, fading, bitter memory.

I have seen a couple of posts from people going to Metallica concerts and it doesn't seem like they are playing much of anything off of St. Anger. Did they just decide that all the songs on St. Anger are not worth playing?

Ward, the official number is 78000, the other numbers spreading arround (72000, 75000 or 80000) are not correct.

It was very emotional concert. Wich is great IMO, I like when there is some drama in music. That's why I perfer Metallica over millions of others metal bands, Metallica can WRITE SONGS wich include all the neccesary elements such as melody, groove, intensity, drama, dynamics etc. And they mix together a lot of cool music such as romantic era classical music, hardcore punk (The Misfits), epic heavy metal (Diamond Head), southern rock (Skynyrd) etc. And all that without the lame and constant double bass wanking, blast beats and cookie monster vocals.

Metallica has changed a lot of people lives, including mine. I was a huge fan when I was 15. I wore Metallica t-shirts with pride, I was a true rebel then, I got in a lot of trouble and fights and got laid too.

And I still admit that I like the band, I'm not another one of those folks who thinks that everyting is a sellout and a band has to make only evil underground music.

As far as the gear goes, well I know that they have used huge walls of Boogies, but not this time. They had a very basic line-up there. No walls and shit. I had a pretty good view what was happening behind them, didn't see huge fridges, just some basic racks for effects. But you newer know what gear the big bands are actually using.
All I can say that the main rhythm sounded like Recto, wich is very unique tone, I have dialed exactly the same tone with Recots, the other amps don't do that sound. I can say the main tone definetly wasn't Triaxis, maybe it was Diezel wich is the only non-Mesa amp that sounds very similar to Rectifier.

There aren't a lot of pics from that show because only licenced photographers who work for newspapers were allowed to take pictures. I was one of the few non-licenced "photographers".

Thanks for the update on the number of people on attendance, that's going in the booklet!

One cool thing about Robert is, besides being a fingerpicking monster on the bass, he started learning Flamenco Guitar a couple of years back and he's already seriously advanced on that. The guy's musically gifted, no doubt.

I can say with absolute certainty that they were NOT playing through that rig. A lot of factors contribute to me thinking this.

One of the more significant ones (but not the only one) is that the Roadies do all the switching (clean to rhythm, to other rhythm, to lead, back to clean, to other rhythm, etc...). They do this at the rack itself.

But anyways that's all detailed bullshit and is of no matter, what is though:

                        They friggin' ROCK!
You took too much, man. Too much. Too much.

Personally i dont think the next album will be very special but then again i am 100% positive that it will be better than ST. Anger - it will probably be someting you would like to listen form time to time .Definately couple good songs, and guitar solos. Also i would be pretty happy if it was something like load or reLoad just more metal .lol the only album before St.Anger that i did\nt like was Justice , also it has some good songs on it.

But i think the new album will take at least a year or even more, cause on interview James told that they dont want to rush with this one.

I'd agree wholeheartedly with that, they aren't worth crap all compared to the rest of the Metallica back catalogue, even the Load/Reload albums (which I actually do kinda like)
