As I said ..if I had to "cut heads" in a trade off, wank-O-Thon ..George would be my first pick, I think I could hang with the guy, and not look like a total tard..

The others would kick my ass..hands down. They were letting him run..they were giving a legend his due...that was George's stage...it was his show...they gave him respect!

Otherswise those other three would destroy him, which they still did on that vid..to my ears and eyes anywhoo.

Are you familiar with the other three's recent work..I think I know who the two asian shredders are..I have alot of Japanese metal..Arkstorm, Saber Tiger, Double Dealer, Concerto Moon, EZO and ect..I think they're from that camp..I'm not sure..I know of Akira Takasaki of Loudness..he's a monster.

But I'm very familar will ALL of Gus G's work..he's not Loomis calibre ..but a major player in the game.

The asian dude in Dragonforce would eat him..and spit out Mr Scary's bones..IMO!

These are my educated thoughts..even tho I'm taking a stab on the asian dudes..the names ain't any ringing bells..but I may have their work..I have over 5000 metal CDS..hard to keep track of who's who.

When George was on his game..fuck, he was a polished madman , with feel and and fire..there is still hints of that in him and some moments of coolness..but just a shadow of what once was..due to his probs.

Hell, I saw Uli Roth a couple months ago..I was baskiing in the glory of a true guitar god..I truly got my fill and my moneys worth that day!

I walked out on Lynch..that's what I'm saying...and he was one of my my main influences..I was too sad to hang around and watch such a mess.

Are George's current problems drug related?

Steve, Those other guys were playing off the cuff in a George Lynch song that he wrote and been playng for 20 years..how was Lynch taking the most chances..I don't understand that ..

I understand the "out of the box" thing..I LOVED that about George , he did that with such fire and feel, and confidence..not now..that was just 80% disjointed slop.

Just my thoughts on an old hero..I'm not trying to piss anyone off at all here..just sharing my view.

I understand the "loyalty" Lynch fan factor here of a true Icon..but I'm not deaf, blind and in denial.

        Respectfully,

        Bill

Ah, I'm not a huge lynch fanboy, but I don't see anything too terrible about his playing here. Also I should mention that George really looked into it. I like that too. Sometimes (see Dragonforce video) players make those "guitar faces" while they are OVER playing over the changes and it looks totally forced. I think that is way lame.

I saw George back in December on the last tour. I had a blast! I thought George played great. Though my guitar player ear was on a little bit, for the most part I just hung out, watched all the girlies shake their butts to the Dokken stuff, and drank beer. I'd go see him again.

I reserve alot of respect for what George gave to me and shred..as I do Eddie..

George alway felt that he was in Ed's shadow, buy his own admission..but at least he's out their doing his best..he may have had some good nights when he was on his game..but I have yet seen any proof of that thus far..

I still put on Dokken, and LM and still feel the way I did when I listen to it..it still gives me chills at times when I hear that ..

I play very "out of the box"..and I owe all that to Ed and George, I'm certain alot of you can relate..so I truly understand your loyalty..

I'm sad, I want to hold them in the same regaurd as I once did..but one fumbled and the other one dropped the ball all together..I wished that wasn't the case..

There will always be a place in my heart for both..because I wouldn't be playing or on this forum without them.

              That's where I'm coming from.

Yeah, it's cool to see players play stuff other than fast arpeggios and scales up and down the board.

I totally agree on that one Bill. Covering a Lynch or VH solo is difficult because they don't play "normal" stuff. Their phrasing and note choice is unorthodox, though I think they are apples and oranges. VH has a great ear and just goes for it... falls down the stairs and lands on his feet as the man himself says. That is the perfect way to decribe it. Though Lynch is also unorthodox, it does sound like he works stuff out when in the studio, using his own different approach if that makes sense.

Either way, you can play the "notes" these guys play, but you'll have a hard time capturing the same feel and vibe. That too me is the signature of a great player.

That sounds awesome Steve. I was a HUGE Lynch "fanboy" seen him 5 times in his heyday..

I had two Dokken VIP passes for me and the wife when they came to town with Reb..

Reb was warming up thru a POD, while he was talking to me for well over an hour..as he was talking, some about George, he was killing me ..just sitting there just twiddlin' not even thinking while he was talking to me..that guy is sick.

Ahh, yeah, the Dragonforce vid..well it's a vid..I think the faces and all that over the top shit was intended..it is flamboyant..

I got their CDs, never seen them live I heard they're awesome, but I don't know personally..they are technical, highly polished players indeed..I think alot of the newer players are pushing shred to another level we never thought possible..

During the shredding 80's ..I always thought the envelope was pushed passed it's limit. Until I discovered Jeff Loomis in '96..That showed me it can be pushed even further and still be VERY fresh and musical.

It wasn't blatant obvious, but it seems he (lynch) isn't as smooth or polished like he used to be. Seems to be a very slight hesitation in some of his licks in the video, like he's not sure what to do, not focused entirely. I personally, don't necessairly see that as a overly huge bad thing, but as a seasoned vet. you wouldn't expect that from lynch. It does seem he may have been distracted for whatever reason/s because at various times it shows
Peace, Love and Happieness and all that stuff...

"Anyone who tries to fling crap my way better have a really good crap flinger."

I personally do not care how it was built as long as it is a good playing/sounding instrument.

Yes, there's a bee in the pudding.

Every "shred" thread comes back to Loomis huh?

Jeff Loomis is a badass. He is one of the few "shred" guys that I can listen to and not get bored of. Thanks for bringing him to our attention.

I've always been a huge fan of George, and I hope he gets his problems sorted out so he can be the player he used to be. It's obvious (especially in that vid) that his mind isn't focused on his playing. I think that's about the sloppiest I've ever heard him.

Though old, George seems to have no problem working his way around the guitar on this one:

Hey Steve, Oh man, when I first met Jeff ..There was no way I could keep him a secret..I was completey taken by surprise..just at the time when I think I heard and saw it all..

Don't thank me..I just wanted to share his talent with others I'd know would really appreciate it..

He doesn't need my help "spreading the word" these days..he's doing just fine all on his own..

I asked him 10 years ago..how does it feel to amoung the best players in the world..his reponse was "Bill, your nuts", while he was peeling the label off his beer bottle, all bored..there was less than 50 people there that night..

Steve, I got that tape!!!..that footage came from the Hot Gutarist VHS in "91/'92 with Nuno, Gilbert and Viv Cambell on it..I still have it somewhere..man I wore that tape out watching that exact footage, when he was laying down two solos for LM's "All I want" and "Dance of the Dogs" ..your preaching to the choir on that stuff man!!

i couldn't watch more than half of those vids. oy.

i respect the fact that he's inspired a lot of guitar players, and i really used to like him when i was in middle/high school and dokken was putting out records, but i started drifting away after back for the attack came out. i like a few songs on it, but that was the last disc i got of theirs. i think scuba steve mentioned his unorthodox style, and perhaps that's what eventually turned me off to his playing. sometimes it just sounds like angry gnats to me. i can listen to only so much before it's just a headache.

that said, he's in his 40s, probably 'roided out to the gills, and i'm sure he doesn't play 1/2 as much as he used to as when he was the new hot shot. i think that it's rare when a known guitarist keeps his chops up for decades. especially when they're not as commercially successful as they were. after awhile, i think you're allowed to be able to live off of your previous success from time to time. the other guys in the videos may have played better, but it doesn't change that fact that he's still george lynch and (i'm guessing) is and will remain far more famous (if that's the term i'm lookin for) than the other dudes. to me, that still counts for something.

although i can understand why his fans would be a little hacked off. i get the same way when i see the players that i like lose their lustre on stage.

Sully, exactly..it's amazing that Uli Roth is better than ever without any commercial success whatsoever and he's reported to be broke..I can see why his music isn't popular..and he always was a pretty quirky dude.

He a guitarist's guitarist and that will never change..

My wife was one of two girls at his show..nothing but all the local players there..that's her favorite guitarist in the world....especially his classical and old Scorps stuff..

I'm more put off by Ed than George..I did bail 30 minutes into his set several months back. I seen Dokken about 5 times and saw him when he really was on his game. He was pretty bad that night, it was depressing me..
