I personally do not care how it was built as long as it is a good playing/sounding instrument.

dont know about you lads but Vai and roth were the perfect pairing,VH was good but vai blew him out the ocean when he teamed up with the big man
Eat Em And Smile has to be one of the best sounding and played albums ever-only one album i know has better tone*Whitesnakes 1987*But vai was on fire with roth on eat em and skyscraper.ahh man that solo on hotdog n a shake!great tapped arps
becker and lil aint enough was piss poor, and i never bought another diamond dave album after that.
i always asumed that vai took eddies throne and made it his own,i cant stand steves solo work and his whitsnake work was shockingly bad but those two albums he made with Dave are good enough for him to claim his crown

Dude , that exactly how I felt..it sure blew away 5150 or OU812..The fuck and Balance were pretty good tho..they redeemed themselves a bit on that stuff..Judgement Day, Pleasurdome, The Seventh Seal..we learned that stuff to thet Ts..I liked it!!
Then we learned both Me wise Magick and that other one and added it to our set..I didn't care for those much..that was '97..
I played "shy boy" note for note in '85..that was my big accomplishment that year I think.."Bill, Smoke a Bowl and Crank Van Halen I, Life is better when I do that"
Donnie Swanstrom 01/25/06..miss ya!

but DD and country!!*shakes head*

Yeah JJW, me and my dude learned that solo right when Eat 'em smile came out..we also learned "addicted to that rush"..I'm not a huge Sheehan fan..he sure had his moments of greatness...I like more refined players like Stu Hamm, Jeff Berlin and Victor Wooten..those are my guys!!
Billy is cool..but his tone always sounds like bumblebees in a coffee can to me..
I gotta start slappin' some wood again..the one with the big strings on it.."Bill, Smoke a Bowl and Crank Van Halen I, Life is better when I do that"
Donnie Swanstrom 01/25/06..miss ya!

Me and my wife went to both tours...eat em and skyscaper.
IMO, Dave was at the top of his game during the Vai days, really commanded the stage effortlessly.
Nothing like seeing Vai lay the guitar down on one of his amps/monitors and play it note for note two handed like playing a piano. Another highlight, was Vai and Sheehan trading licks back and forth. They done it tastefully making it impressive and enjoyable.
What alot folks forget and they kept it pretty quiet, nonetheless it leaked out. Vai only signed up for a two record and two tour contract.
Dave had to milk it every bit it was worth. Thus, he knew fully he was fortunate enough to have an all-star band that dominated sales and tours during the Vai and Sheehan years. Those were the ole days when rock was fun. You spent 20 -25 a ticket and knew it was money well spent cause you knew you were gonna have fun. The 80's was about the "show" a disneyland experience if you will and bands like DLR, WS, Iron Maiden, Priest and a few others were not only gonna give you a night of good music but a great show also.Peace, Love and Happieness and all that stuff...

Vai killed me when he did the solo to On fire with one hand behind his back...NICE!!
he was like F U Eddie!!!
Then he added a little eruption to his own solo..that was kick asss!!
Skyscraper fucking Dave almost fell off his flying surf Board..he's a crazy bastid!
Hell, that was Big Arena rock man at it's finest..!!!
Tommy Lee spinning around over my head in a cage doing his solo..I hate that guy now..but that was cool..
We saw the Scorpions Blackout and Maiden NOTB tour..Sold out shows..
great memories!!"Bill, Smoke a Bowl and Crank Van Halen I, Life is better when I do that"

but why be blinded to the facts of life..
The fact is Metal/shred has evolved..players have raised the bar in skill level..leaving the has beens far in the dust..
accpet that..you can't be the "king" forever..they all have their place and are immortalized by their contrabutions..leave it at that..
Move on, instead of waiting for something that will never happen..while the scene is jumpin' with hungry new players, that took the ball and ran with it..
I care less about the new players because they aren't cool.
I've always been a fan of real rock'n'roll music and lifestyle.
I like players with badass attitude, players who bang tons of groupies and are cool on the stage.
I'll take Keith Richards or Joe Perry over any new guy.
Chops don't really matter to me that much, I like great attitude and great songs.
Old guitar heroes could write amazing hooks, the way the new guys write songs don't appeal to me, they aren't really memoriable.
Old guitar heroes sounded very original and their playing style had a lot of character. Their playing style came from their personal experiences.
New guys lack of originality and character. How can you have any character in your playing when you practice scales 15 hours in a day at home.
You need some outside influences to build your character.
Everyone tells me about all these new guitar gods and how groundbreaking they are. I'm not amazed at all. As far as I'm concerned all the music is done, every note combination is used allready etc.
And there isn't anything new or original about pure speed.
Let's take everyone's favourite Jeff Loomis. I think Nevermore is a good band and they have many cool riffs but when it comes to solos I don't hear anything new or groundbreaking. The guy is good but can anyone show me where exactly he is doing something that no one hasn't done before. Just show me the exact moment. All I hear are Yngwie's, Gilbert's nad Becker's licks wich the original guys did much better.
I think some of the old guys are still the best. Players like Greg Howe can wipe floor with the new guys.
I need players with good songwriting skills, amazing stage presence and a big groupie following.

My honest response..
E, I am your JCF father...listen to Dad..
You'll never forget where you came from..but metal/playing HAS evolved into a language you don't understand fully at this time...This is a very common issue.
I went thru this before with many who eventually "saw the light"..this is true.
Remember these words..you'll realize eventually I was right..I always am..
You see..I know your language fluently..I known it since you were a baby...but now I'm trying to show you something new and really GOOD...you're just not ready!!
That's all..
Love,
Dad
Put down the Dokken Record son..put down the Dokken record..just for now..it's time to explore other things..
Listen E..Put on Nevermore for one week..just a week..don't listen to nothing else..no VH..no Dokken..No Ratt..No Racer X..get to "know" it..give it the same chance you gave all that old stuff..do it for me..maybe, just maybe it'll click..
We'll start with Nevermore and go from there.."This Godless Endeavor" will do..do it for me.."Bill, Smoke a Bowl and Crank Van Halen I, Life is better when I do that"

Bill, my search for the new music is over. I listened to that stuff for a long time. I don't have anything against new music. I listened to Godless Endeavor for 2 weeks when it came out.
I'm a aware of what's going on, Tool, The Mars Volta, Lamb Of God, Nevermore, Outworld etc. I know know

They are showing some blues band concert right now, old Chicago style blues, all black folks, Sandra Hall - old lady singing, two guitar players, one old dude with ES-355 played cool blues licks
and then did a friggin sweep picked arpeggio ripping at the end of the song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
now the bass player is doing some badass slapping soloLast edited by Endrik; 07-30-2006, 06:50 PM."There is nothing more fearful than imagination without taste" - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
