Yeah, his playing was terrible in that video. But if getting back to his roots by playing at parties is making him happy, then go for it.

I cut and pasted this on three threads that this applies to..

          so here goes..

I have a question..why is it so common place to cling onto past guitar heroes who lost their mojo years ago..or just peaked 20 years ago..I can understand the loyalty factor for guys like Lynch or Ed that made you want to pick up the guitar..I know this!

but why be blinded to the facts of life..

The fact is Metal/shred has evolved..players have raised the bar in skill level..leaving the has beens far in the dust..

accpet that..you can't be the "king" forever..they all have their place and are immortalized by their contrabutions..leave it at that..

Move on, instead of waiting for something that will never happen..while the scene is jumpin' with hungry new great players, that took the ball and ran with it..

These are my thoughts after being a loyal fan and player over 27 years..or longer..since 1978!

Guitar has evolved since 1978..for the better, acknwoledge it and embrace it!

There´s an EVH thread every month and at the end they´re all alike. Many people seem to think that EVH owes them something. I am happy with I, II. 1984, Balance and that´s it.

His alcohol abuse is well documented. I wish him a sober and happy life. But not because a new album or tour will become more likely to happen. If he starts playing pool parties that´s fine with me. I even think his playing wasn´t bad at all. Rather this than another 5 minute eruption like solo. As Bill put it: Guitar has evolved. My .02.

Another let's bash Eddie thread. How come a thread about Ed's gear always turns into a bash of his appearance? I wish I was that fucking ripped.

You all can take a flying suck at my ass.

Bill, I will bet you your Cobra that in 20 years nobody will even know who Jeff Loomis is, but Eddie will still be considered the greatest rock guitarist who ever lived.

                  Interested in taking that bet?

Bill, nothing would give me more pleasure than to hang out with Ed, smoke a carton of Cowboy Killers and down a case of Smoking Loon...while noodling on guitars and busting on all of the young kids out there that think, dare think, they can hang with THE KING!!

That was always my dream..to meet Ed..I had that dream for such a long time..when he was on his game..even when I thought his music became a bit lame for radio sake..he just seems so depressed..I'm already depressed..I think we would hit it off trading our woes other than riffs..

Iloved and still love VH and their albums, Eddie's playing (though looking back at that hip thing DLR used to do, ugh), but i saw them twice around 80 and their concerts just didn't have that energy. At around the same time I saw ACDC, the Who and a couple years later the Scorpions in concert, and I can clearly remember that all 3 of those bands blew the doors off VH.

Maybe it was all the build-up and the hype. VH was clearly the biggest band in the US in 1980, so we went into the concert expecting to be wowed. It didn't happen. The Who, even though I wasn't a huge fan of theirs, is still the best band I ever saw live.

I've seen enough video to come to a tentative conclusion that VH went downhill quickly as a live band after the first two tours. I'm guessing that there was too much of everything--alcohol, drugs, wives, and DLR's ego and horrible vocal technique. There's no way that machine could keep running on all cylinders for very long given all that. And to me, on record it starts to show on both the Diver Down and 1984 albums--neither is nearly as focused, intense or interesting as the first two albums.

But obviously VH launched the careers of a zillion bands and wannabe guitar heros, so the influence is undeniable.
