I've come to the conclusion that this is what Rush could've sounded like if they actually had balls and a guitarist that could actually play.
I want some of what you are smoking, Nick, because you are fucking high. Alex Lifeson is an amazing guitar player with a unique and instantly recognizable style. He may lack some of the technical prowess of a Loomis, but he is a pioneer and an amazing player. I also don't see RUSH ever sounding like Nevermore, or developing in that direction. RUSH has always been too sophisticated and "arty" for that direction.

Sleep. The sound doesn't collapse to riffs of early eyes either.
Mike have you ever listened to the song "This Godless Endeavor"?
I mean really listened to it?
I agree that Lifeson definitely has a unique and instantly recognizable style. I think you're reading me wrong here, I love Rush I was a huge fan back in the day, but I saw them live 3 times and Lifeson flat out sucked ass all 3 times. what I'm saying is that "if" rush had a shredder like Loomis they could've sounded like this. Nevemore does plenty of Way out there acoustic stuff as well, like Rush used to, Unless you really Know Nevermores material , how can you say "too artsy and sophisticated?" I've been learning a bunch on nevermore tunes lately, there's plenty of sophistication there, his freaking rhythms are harder to play than half the solos that some of these other "shredders" solos. Lot's of cool time changes wild chord voicings etc.
I oftened wonder why so many players here defend Lifeson?
and who was the real pioneer, Lifeson, or Geddy lee? , who actualy did all the writing? If Lifeson, I'll concede to that, if not I stand by my opinion I think and have always thought Lifeson was the weak link in that band.

I think "This Godless Endeavor" is a killer song. I have listened to it 56 times according to my iTunes log. I have 25 Nevermore songs and I listen to them quite frequently. I am not saying Nevermore is not sophisticated music, but lyrically it can be downright cartoonish, if you ask me....just does not rise to the level it hopes to obtain. Rush has always been "art rock"....well, not always...early Rush was really straightforward power trio rock, but they did develop into an artsy band. I defend Lifeson because I really admire him as a guitar player. I think he is very talented. I think he has certainly lost a good bit of that fire from the early days, but he is still better than I will ever be. He also has a style that is hard to cop correctly..he can be very frantic...but he pulls it together. I also think that he had killer tone, until the '80s. I am actually listening to 2112 right now and it is still a benchmark album for me tonally. Lifeson just made those 335-45-55's sing.
I don't know who writes the music, but I can't see Lifeson in a Kirk Hammet role, the guitar parts are way too intricate to have been handed to him by Lee. I know the lyrics are written by Neil.

I have to listen to the lyrics a little closer, I have been immersed in the actual music (since I'm learning it).
some of rush's earlier lyrics were somewhat cartoonish early on as well, althought I agree with you, by the time "Permanent Waves" came out lyricly they had grown quite a bit.
here is a cool site BTW I agree with this guy pretty much dead on
concerning Lifeson.

Yeah, that is a very accurate depiction of Alex. I love that site and have read all of those player profiles..some great observations there and some really funny stuff.
When I was first learning guitar we worshipped two guys, really....EVH and Lifeson.

without Lifeson there wouldn't be Queensryche, Dream Theater etc. Even EVH was influenced of Al.
And you know there wouldn't be Nevermore without Queensryche.
I really don't want to turn this thread into an "Alex Lifeson" thread, I was really commenting on the song "This Godless Endeavor".
We all have or opinions on Alex, to each his own.

Well, don't slam the guy and then expect people that like him not to post their opinions.

I don't want to argue Bill,
I agree Mike is a cool guy, I just want to get off of the "Alex Lifeson" focus, I'l start a "I think Alex Lifeson sucks" thread if I need to, I just wanted to get back on to the Nevermore topic.
Mike is "the defender of all that is VH"
I applaud him for his convictions, I just want to get back to "This Godless fucking really hard to play Endeavor"
...Yes I hear Nick..I give you credit for even trying to learn it..
I never learn covers note for note...I'm just an "original" hack player..
I let the riffs/music inspire me..then I try to rip it off and make it my own as much as possible without sounding like I did..I make up all my songs that way!!
OK..I'm going to put on This Godless Endeavor now..and go lay down..I'm soooo sick the last couple days..got a bad cold..I thinks it's a sinus infection..could be a yeast infection..I had a lot of bread this week!!
Bye guys..
