Yeah, he was far surpassed by them. But he could've afforded to take a year off and woodshed. He could've done something to take himself to the next level, to keep up with the rise in technical ability. I guess he figured he'd made his mark though. Probably the sappy ballad "mature" songs were a retreat from the gunslinger competition.

But he could have stayed relevant if he still had some fire. He needed a push to do that though, not a bunch of yes-men stroking his ego. That is why I think he needed Dave. Dave was a rival power within the band and Sammy never was, to the extent to get him fired up. Dave would get him mad enough to say "Oh yeah? Fuck you!" and he'd play some hot shit. With Sam he got lazy as hell in his playing, real complacent.

Yep, I remember Dave wanted to keep Ed in the spotlight and read many times when he said.."Ed nobody wants to hear you play with your casio"..Dave cracked the whip..and prooved his point with Eat 'em and Smile...that he did..because it smoked!!!

Ironically, they got even bigger playing sappy keyboard love ballads, alot of airplay..but I think everyone would agree that the DLR era was THE real Van Halen!!!

The only hope for that camp is to put in a world class singer like Jorne in that fold..I heard him make a turd shine..

but Jorn is playing with better guitarists than Ed now anyway. Guys like Tore Ostby, Jorn Viggo Lofstad, Magnus Karlsson. Do you think Jorn would drop by the VH camp long enough to do any more than jam, before his outspoken-ness pisses off Ed and he hits the road to his next project?

          +1 Same here.
the only band I've been turned onto since 2000 that has
          really kicked my ass.

              I'm prepared...

I still dug Dead Heart, but now I think Nevermore is on automatic pilot. A buddy of mine has this book of metal reviews where some band is described as sounding like a "vacuum cleaner with drums." When I tried to listen to the last couple of ablums, this expression immediately came to mind.. Yes, Jeff is a stunningly good player, but IMO their current songwriting is horribly tedious.

+1000 to Never *fucking* more kicking some serious ass!!!! Thanks to everyone here for talking about them because two years ago I just couldn't get into them for some reason, but after you guys were talking about their new album and me looping The Final Product for a week straight they have become my favorite and "heaviest" band that I listen to. I Definitely agree 100% about Nevermore being crucial in influencing the next wave of Shredders and Heavy Metal in the very near future!!

The leads seem to come thru OK but his rythms are mud which sucks because he's such a awesome rythm player and that stuff is pretty complex..
i agree about the kranks. i saw a video from guitar world of Jeff and Steve playing Psalms of Lydia. Their tone on the video was terrible. You could tell they were hating it.

No prob man..I still have much love to spread right in my own little circles..alot of my freinds stiil tend to stray from NM..they'll come around..I think it's still over their heads..I know I'm right..because they saw the light on other bands..that I insisted on...I won't give up..

Nevermore is the best metal band today..what is there not to like??..

Jeff Loomis is the epitome of a guitar heroe that should grace the covers of every single guitar publication..and the most humble player I have ever met! You must remeber this..I knew of Jeff when the likes of Wes Borland, Tom Morello, Kirk Hammett, Mushook. Tremonti , Korn and that ilk was gracing the covers of GW for almost a decade..so, keep that in mind!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He's just a natural and exceptional talent..and the only advise he ever offers is the same he follows.."just go for it".

Hey I totally agree with all that! I've heard the Loomis demo at age 16 and he had -almost- as much chops back then as he does today! I was wondering if you knew at what age Jeff started playing to be that good at 16. I didn't even start till I was 17 and I'm Jeff's age.

BTW do you know who the 2nd guitarist will be for their DVD shoot? I like Chris B but wish it was Steve Smyth as I am a big fan of his songs on TGE.

Chris Broderick is filling in now, the guy from Jag Panzer. He's awesome.

and are you sure that Jeff doesn't know much theory stuff ? because his stuff looks pretty spot on

It's a shame that Steve is not out there, I would hate for their first official live DVD not to have one of the real band members.

Steve is damn good ..but the ONLY other secondary player that gave Jeff a run for his money is Tim Calvert of Forbidden..in fact at times I think he whooped his ass..or damn pretty close to it!!

Tim and I hit it off very well...we spoke on the horn..he had to quit to feed the family..he's a pilot for Continental..super nice dude..awesome player..he's got my police badge...he wanted it!!

smokes steve..as good as steve is!!

Broderick is a great secondary..he played all rythm the last time he filled in for them...that boy can shred!!
