G3 tones

Ok guys, I have 3 G3 cd's (is that all they currently have released?):
1. Johnson
2. Malmsteen
3. Petrucci

On each CD I think Satch's tone is the best. I'm not sure which amps he played on all 3, I'm assuming a Peavey on at least 1, but his tone is thick and ballsy. Vai's tone always seems thin and is especially noticed on the jams. Malmsteen's mix seems off in the beginning then gets better as the show progresses. Comparing all cd's, he's on fire more than everyone else. Petrucci sounds closest to Satch in tone but still comes up a tad short. Johnson's tone is unique and stands alone for what it is.

Anyone know how Satch and Vai determine who will be the 3rd when they venture out on a new G3 project? With that in mind, who would you want to see with them? I'd actually like to see them pick up Chris Poland, Harry Cody, or Akira Takasaki. Maybe Nuno.

Nobody has tone like Eric Johnson, you have to hear it in person to really appreciate it. It is so organic and enormous.

I would like to see Satch and Vai take Gary Moore out on the G3, that would be sweet.

I have to watch them again, but i agree - his tone was great. i think the 2nd (maybe 3rd one??) is the JSX prototype...

Johnson's and Petrucci's are the best by far.

Vai's tone is sometimes good, sometimes awsome, sometimes fuzzy, sometimes thin. On the first G3 record when he did his own stuff, his tone was pretty good.

I've never cared about Satch or Yngwie's tone. Satch's tone doesn't have enough depth. Yngwie's tone is a big 70's fuzz.

Aren't they doing a Johnson/Petrucci/Satch G3 in South America pretty soon? Vai was caught up in his own tour so he can't be joining them.

As far as the tones are concerned, Petrucci's got my vote, Johnson might be the ultimate tonewhore, but there's something about it (perhaps even just his playing/phrasing or whatnot) that does not seem right and it seems overly 'sweet' and 'sugarcoated' to the point of giving me bad chills actually.

I have never liked Vai's sound and Satch's got sort of an indistinctive sound, good, but I wouldn't be able to pick it out of a line of 10 others, when blindfolded.

I have noticed that modern EL34 amps sound kinda fuzzy and thin a lot of times no matter who is playing with them, Vai, Satch, Gilbert etc. in live situation.
Modern or vintage 6L6 amps or vintage EL34 amps sound much cleaner and fatter.
Just my thought.

i think we'll see paul in the next g3, but his live tone leaves a lot to be desired. it's crisp and all, but sometimes borders on too fizzy.

vais to is.. it works for him. for his style. and it works very well.

Eric may be reknowned for the attention he pays to his tone, but it has never done anything for me. And I don't buy into the "that's because you haven't heard it live" hype. He reminds me a little of Earl Klugh, in that he's a great player and all, but there's just something too saccharine about his playing/tone

I think Malmsteen had by far the best tone. Organic.. and it sounded really loud.

Yeah, yeah yeah....I heard "Tones" before I saw him live for the first time in 1988. I liked it, but I wasn't floored. Then I saw him live. Buy it or not, if you saw him live you would have a completely different appreciation for his tone. It is not sugary, it is huge and organic.
