My bass player lent me the Dio Holy Diver live DVD with Doug on guitar. If you can pick it up, I highly recommend it. I have the Whitesnake DVD with Doug as well, but with Dio he is totally in shred mode. His tone is awesome and his playing is flawless. Good stuff!

Justin, check out some of his solo albums, those are full of different styles and whatnot....blues, rock, funk, jazz-fusion etc."There is nothing more fearful than imagination without taste" - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Doug fucking rocks! I had no idea who he was till he joined Dio and then I was blown away. I've been lucky enough to see him live and he's just a spectacular showman as well as player. Those 2 Dio DVDs and the Whitesnake DVD are made so much more amazing because he's on there.
When he was in Dio I was like "This dude is a better fit than Viv was" or "This dude should be in Whitesnake," and no time later he was.
I really hate that he's been around so long but I just in the past 5 or so years started getting into his playing, makes me feel like I missed out ... even though I'm trying to get all his previous stuff.I swear, by my life and my love of it, that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine. - Ayn Rand

He reminds me a bit a of Zakk in tone and style, but without the cheesy image thing going on. Doug seems to be really into it, and looks a bit like RR at times throughout the performance, which is cool. Also, his tone is very defined... you can hear every note of every chord that he plays.
You can hear a bit of Sykes and Moore in there too.

I haven't heard of that one (Holy Diver DVD), but I do have the Evil or Divine DVD. Doug plays great on that one. Plus his gold sparkle strat is shithot!!
I hear the Sykes/Moore influence in there too. I wonder if that in part is because he is playing Viv's old solos, and Viv wore his Moore influence on his sleeve. I haven't heard Doug's older work, prior to playing with RJDHail yesterday

What up Gary?
Doug plays a beat up black strat with a humbucker in the bridge for songs where he needs a trem, but mostly a gold top Les Paul in this one.
Doug pretty much plays Viv's solos as they were recorded, but even cleaner IMO. Not an easy feat because as we know, Viv could kick some major ass back in his Dio days.
Gates of Babylon, Rainbow in the Dark, and his unaccompanied solo are definitely highlights IMO. I wonder if I could get my band to play "Gates"...Last edited by khabibissell; 08-05-2006, 07:43 PM.

watching Doug play those songs was somewhat of an epiphany for me. I used to get too hung up on trying to nail them exactly has Viv did, but I'm just not good enough a player to do that. I certainly can't play them like Doug does either, but it showed me that there can be more than one way to make the same song sound cool. If I can pick up something cool in the way each guy plays the same song, I can find the easiest way for ME to play itHail yesterday

I somehow scored his "Electo Vision" instructional DVd and my eyes finally got opened to this guy.
Justin, check out the solo CD "Electro Vision" particularly the song "Super Fly Sumo"
he is one tasty lick playing mofo.
he is a blues based mainly Pentatonic player but he can smoke up the fret board!
That CD just cranks from beginning to end.
It's kind of funny when he plays as a hired gun slinger he almost always plays Les Pauls , but when he's doing his own thing it's almost always strats. If this is our perdition, will you walk with me?
