I think being sloppy is part of the rock and roll lead guitar sound. You can't get the human emotion into it if You just follow the metronome and tuner. It's funny that the best singers can express themselves by staying behind tempo or going a little out of pitch for a moment but guitarists are often considered bad if they don't sound like a synth module. IMO rhythm needs to be tight and have the drive to it but when it comes to leads it should be all about expression.
For me it's a lot more difficult to name technical players who can kick ass. Jeff Waters comes to mind right away...
