Because it's much more fun bashing the crap out of the open e-string.

Because that string is the lowest you can go, and everybody wants to go as low as possible. If it still isn't low enough, it is time for tuning further down.

Then proceed with what Baum said...
And playing open strings is easier for the left hand, too.

Besides Drop D, and of course Eb, I don't even know to play any songs in non-standard tunings. I guess I just never got into that dropped to the floor, strung with Linguini style of guitar playing.

Sleep. The sound doesn't collapse to riffs of early eyes either.

I believe Norther plays in standard E and Kalmah plays in Eb, both are relatively new melodic death bands.

I think he was talking about the key signature of the song, not the guitar tuning used.
Not that I have any idea what key Tornado is in, but at least it starts out on B.

Yes, I was referring to the key Tornado of Souls is in. Just trying to emphasize you can write a song in a non-"low" key and still have it be heavy.

Wow, unless a person lives under a musical rock, it's pretty hard to not be exposed to at least some non-standard guitar tunings beyond those two. Tuning low isn't just a modern thing....I can think of some bands from the 70s that played D and lower. Also, what about open tunings for slide or whatever?

Say what you will about Kerry King. But HE is the TRUE brainchild and force of Slayer. where Jeff and Thom seem to beat around the bush in the subject matter within the message and intent of Slayer...King goes for the throat with a I don't give a fuck 'tude..he says what's on his mind without due care what others think..he doesn't hold back...THAT is what I love about Slayer..it's the soundtrack to how I feel..all thanks to Kerry..he says what I want to hear...that I can relate to.

I think he gets a bad rap..he plays most of the Jeff's solos in the studio..that means he writes his parts basically..well a lot of it..Jeff just plays it live..

This is very blatant in the lyrics and writing credits on "Christ Illusion"..

I always see threads on Jeff..but never Kerry..there would be no Slayer without him. In fact I like Kerry's solos better than Jeff's on CI..well why not he's playing most of them.

Kerry stated in the new GW, it's much easier to sync the solos this way..if he just played both parts ..to me Jeff is just support with their live sound..King is the main dude!!

what you think is Jeff..is Kerry..
"Bill, Smoke a Bowl and Crank Van Halen I, Life is better when I do that"
                    Donnie Swanstrom 01/25/06..miss ya!

"Well, your friend would have Bell's Palsy, which is a facial paralysis, not "Balls Pelsy" like we're joking about here." Toejam's attempt at sensitivity.

No, I am well aware of alternate tunings...I just never learned any songs using them...well, not true..I can play "She Talks To Angels" which is in open E, IIRC. I am not much of a slide player, so I never really had any need to learn open chord tunings. Yeah, Iomi tuned down as low as C sometimes...but you can play Sabbath tunes in standard no sweat and they stiill sound good.

there is no pre- or post-crap. They evolved and you apparently aren't musically mature enough to evolve with them. Stop waiting for them to record MOPII already!

I'm sorry. I knew I couldn't say that and not crack up. :ROTF:

drock, my mistake...yea tornado is in the key of B.
i actually have to force myself to write in different keys other than B because i always want to write riffs in that key....probly cause it's so cool, especially for a really thrashy riff.

What tuning did Death use? Doesn't sound very low.

Off the top of my head i know Dimmu Borgir & emperor play in standard tuning then in the thrash scene alot of suicidal tendencies songs were too as for death metal deicide & cannibal corpse are only half a step down Eb.
