Does anyone know of any artists that have excellent technique, sweeping, tapping, whatever, but are also very melodic? I'm looking specifically for newer bands... thanks.

I'm not really into the supershredders, the dudes with blinding technique but can't come up with a memorable solo. I like guys who have all the technique but sound musical with it too.
Check out these guys:
Jorn Viggo Lofstad
Magnus Karlsson
Gus G
Reb Beach (not so new )

Lofstad is an awesome melodic player. The second Pagan's Mind CD is great stuff as is the most recent offering. Osiris Eyes, Celestine Prophecy and Supremecy, Our Kind are all killer tunes and favorites of mine. Also check out Roland Grapow, especially his Masterplan and Helloween stuff. Stuart Smith, especially the cd Heaven and Earth, is also a great melodic player, albeit from a more blues oriented direction. However, for true melodic metal soloing, Michael Schenker is the definition of melodic in my book. The albums Strangers in the Night (UFO) and Live in Budokan (MSG) should be required listening for anyone who likes melodic metal. All other melodic metal players spring from him so to speak. These guys all have incredible chops and monster feel. At least in my book.

Oh, and while we're on the subject of Norwegian shredders (see I never really forget about that, do I), you might wanna check out Jarle H. Olsen at
Might be to much shredding or show-off or whatever for some people, but I think he's pretty amazing.. Still waiting for him to release a CD Apparently he's working on it, said he had all the songs ready when I spoke with him anyway..."This ain't no Arsenio Hall show, destroy something!"
