The one thing that pissed me off about the Virtual XI album is there were like no drum fills on that one! A lot of cymbal crashes, but it's like the programmed a drum machine and Nicko was on vacation. And the songs on that album sucked anyway, choruses just too long and overdone.

I loved The X Factor and Brave New World cds... some tasty playing on those.

I'm probably gonna get struck by lightning for saying this but,...

I wish Bruce never woulda disbanded his last band and he, AS and Roy Z were still making records. I freakin loved Accident, Chemical Wedding and Tyranny. To me those 3 albums are far better than any Maiden since 7th Son. There, I said it.

Long time Maiden fan. Haven't fully enjoyed any of the albums since seventh son came out. Must say one thing though. Bruce's solo project is pretty killer =)

Tyranny came out last year. He just put out a DVD, too. Why wouldn't he be doing any more solo stuff?

for a 3 guitar band, i don't like the way they approach 3 guitar arrangements. if 1 guys playing a melody, the other 2 are playing a harmony or octive, EVERYTIME! why can't one guy play rhythm? is that so much to ask? the old albums have a recorded rhythm guitar part under harmonies in a good many songs - and no one plays that part live even with the 3 guitarist. WTF!
and why can't they write a 3.5 min radio hit anymore? they used to be great at it. come on guys at least 1 radio single on each album would be refressing next to the 6+ mins of the BNW chorus in each song.

yes, Bruce is singing better than he ever has before. i can clearly hear that. but it doesn't make any difference if i'm falling asleep listening to it, instead of paying attention and hanging on to every note at the edge of my seat with a huge smile on my face like it did when i first heard Piece of Mind.

and i would like to hear more vocal harmonies and gang choruses like they used to.

DAMNIT, just let me be their producer for the next album. then it WOULD be the best IM album since 7th son!

I'm a BIG Maiden fan. Have been since I first heard The Prisoner back in '82. I was looking forward to the new album and a buddy fired it off to me via Yousendit today. I will buy it, as I always do, even though Maiden have been getting less interesting and more repetative since Bruce left. Even when he came back for BNW (great album, but with it's flaws), they just haven't been as good.

So far I've only had a chance to listen to the first 3 songs, and I'm not too impressed.

Different World is a rip-off of every other Maiden up tempo song from the last 4 releases. Wicker Man, New Frontier...all using the same fucking E, C, D and back to E chord progression that's been a cliche since before Maiden started overusing it. These Colors Don't Run: same thing. Chord progressions and drum sequences that have been used way too often. In fact, there's something about this song that's exactly like a track off DOD, I just can't be arsed to give it another spin right now. And people say Jon Schaffer rips his own riffs off.

Brighter Than A Thousand Suns is a good tune, abeit far too long. Some cool riffage in there. Nice drums too. Steve's bass lines are predictable, as you would expect lately. Bruce's voice isn't near as good as his last solo record and he did that one with bruised ribs!

Not a good start as far as I'm concerned. Guitar solos are pretty much an after thought - not nearly memorable. Vocals sound okay. Production overall is pretty good, considering I'm listening to MP3's and they didn't master the album. I'm going to give it a good headphone listen later tonight, if I don't fall asleep (I haven't slept in 2 days).

Seems to me like they need an outside producer to force them to edit down their songs. The last several albums have been way too repetitive.

I got the new album today, and overall I think it's a very good album. But there's something that's making it not quite right. . .

I don't know, I saw the MTV special the other night too and I thought the songs sounded great. Maybe I am stuck in the 80's but I think it's cool that Maiden STILL SOUNDS like Maiden. With that said, I heard some of the new tunes on the internet and I for one liked what I heard.

The best part of this all is that when they were interviewing Bruce about the new tour, right away he mentioned Nassau Coliseum!!! I jumped on the computer and BAM........fired off my credit card info for 2 tickets!!!! I can't wait!!!! I saw them many times over the years, now I'm taking my 13 yr old son. He's now an 80's Metal Head like his "old man!"

OK, I am going to drawn a comparison here to my favorite band. I have been a Rush fan for more than 25 years and frankly, I hear the same stuff being said here as I have about Rush for the last several years. Namely, that the band has progressed from the older format and is into a newer, different sound. I can see why that pisses some people off. I love old Maiden. They are one of my 3 favorite all time metal bands. Killers, Number of the Beast and Powerslave are insanely great albums, but even though it is quite different sounding, I found DoD to be a great album as well. Just as I love Test For Echo as much as Hemispheres, I find Dance of Death to be as fun to listen to as Powerslave. To me, it's all relative. I accept that to be in a band that long, there are bound to be changes in the direction of the music as band members grow themselves and are influenced to play newer stuff. The fact that not everyone feels the same is irrelevant. The guys in Maiden have found this new direction and sound that they like and are free to explore it. To me, it makes each new album more interesting. I would find it as boring as a listner to hear a band regurgitate the same stuff for 25 years. Thats just my opinion of course. Take it or leave it as the case may be.
