I admit to being a little burned out by the "....with orchestra" releases. Metallica, Kiss, etc.
Don't get me wrong, I've got every CD and DVD they have ever released, but just I don't dig the "heavy metal rewritten for cellos, tubas, kettle drums".
So, I happen to dig out my CD of Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, and after listening to it, I thought "Well, maybe if they did the whole Inner Turbulence suite, it would be worth getting, especially to hear the Overture".
So, I look on the song list, and there it is!
So, yeah, I'll pick it up Wednesday, since I've got Wed., Thurs., and Fri. off of work (pardon me while I do a Snoopy dance). It will give me something to watch.

Just my opinion, but this release is the final nail in Dream Theater's coffin.
To give some background here, I've been a rabid fan since the '89 release of When Dream and Day Unite. I was at the show when the Pull Me Under video was shot. I have a GIANT promo poster from Awake framed on my office wall.
They've been slipping for years. Scenes From A Memory was a brief reprieve, but the trend is unmistakable. Octavarium was garbage. For the first time they forgot both how to write songs and how to keep it heavy. No question they can still play, but jeez.
Now to follow it up, they release a DVD of ALL of their weakest material with the exception of a couple of songs from I&W.
The really sad thing about it is that there's no other band like them to pick up the slack. Lots of contenders, but nothing great. This electric phase ain't no teenage craze -UFO

petedz,
ya gotta wonder, how much more could they possibly do? I will always have a place in my musical heart for DT, they can do no wrong imho. What theyve done already is more than I personally could ever hope for in a band. Anything past Awake is just icing on the cake for me.
DT is DT. They do what they do best;tear the ass outta their instruments collectively, and in most circumstances in perfect time.

tseegert,
I guess there's two ways of looking at the band:
(1) The ultimate cult jam band--kinda like the Grateful Dead, but for shred geeks. That's valid, and they've done a lot to promote it with all the covers concerts and musical goofiness. It's not why I became a fan.
(2) A group of highly original songwriters who just happen to shred. This is why I loved the band.
On the first three albums, there's hardly any filler. Every song grabs you by the 'nads. The only misfires were Afterlife and Innocence Faded--ironically both on the new DVD.
Kevin Moore's departure hit the band really hard, and Falling Into Infinity shows it. On that one, I have to go from picking dogs to looking for something to salvage. Burning My Soul is ok.
As I said before, I thought the album Scenes From A Memory kicked ass. At that point I had hoped that with Sherinian gone the band was back. Now, after two mostly lame studio releases and an utterly hopeless one, I've given up. Obviously I care too much, but this was my last case of hero worship. I agree about Derek, he was a train wreck for DT. I still find it hard to listen to Once in a Livetime... god, his damn wah-pedal-whammy keyboarding was plain annoying live. Then came the man.
