Eddie did the Thriller album as well, but since they didn't like for anyone to do outside projects, Eddie did it for $1.

One of the highest-selling albums of all time, and EVH shot himslef in the foot.

The split between DLR and VH was mutual. Ed wanted to spend more time in the studio, and Dave wanted to wing it and keep the raw sound that defined VH for years. He did not want to spend months in the studio going over the same tracks so Ed could layer his new keyboard toys from 1984.

I can see both points, as I've been guilty of having both attitudes (even in the same recording session )

Ed wants to advance in his musicianship and show he's more than just some geetarist, Dave wants to be the 40-year-old teenager.

In the end the fans lose out because these two can't agree, but just like the deaths of John Bonham, John Lennon, Bon Scott, and Randy Rhoads, all good things must come to an end.
I want to depart this world the same way I arrived; screaming and covered in someone else's blood

The most human thing we can do is comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.

That's what wiki says, and there are a couple interesting stories about EVH recording the solo over there http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beat_It

          From the article it says:

Van Halen famously did not request payment for his performance.

All I remember is reading Eddie's interview about it in Guitar World years ago where he told the story but said he did it for free.

Nice article. Is there anything they don't have an article about??
