I have no clue what he was doing there, but Suhr told me (this was around 2003) he was doing work for Eddie and he checked out Eddies Frankenstein guitar. He said he could make me a pick-up that was almost identical to his "frankie" p/u. Suhr said the pick-up was actually broken all of these years and one of the coils was almost dead. So EVH's humbucker was inbetween a single coil and a humbucker. Real low output...

you are absolutely correct the pup that ed used was broken in the technical sense but had output and a tone ed liked a lot.
it is like a P-90 on steriods tone
i talked to steve blucher over at dimarzio and the bridge pup in the EBMM EVH sig guitar was based on this same broken pup
it turns out that that pup was a duncan custom-custom with one coil not working 100%
I have one of these i made myself and it is a killer EVH pup
I actually prefer the dimarzio version more though it is warmer and has more punch.
you can make a EVH dimarzio pretty easily if you have basic pup working skills and
you need a dimarzio air zone and some logic too
the EVH pup is a lower output tone zone and has less bass as well and if you mod a air zone just right it dupes the EVH dimarzio
some guys say the stock air zone is dead on but i disagree it does not have the output or bite of the EVH dimarzio

FWIW, he originally used a 1961 gibson paf that had ONE coil rewound to have more output this is the tone on the first 3 recordings
his ibanez destroyer had a self rewound dimarzio super D that had a alnico II magnet,he used this on all the non trem songs you hear like "on fire" "feel your love tonight" and "you really got me" among others
