for me, it's not the "happy" music style.. i like power metal in general.

it's the beyond crap tone they got, the idiocy with which they portray themselves (at least totman, li, and that keyboard player of theirs), level of unprofessionalism (i seriously havent seen anything from them, where they wouldnt be either drunk, or making complete asses of themselves othervise)
and their music is .. crap. the same shit over and over and over again. seriously, like they only have 3 songs and they rotate the riffs and solos and lyrics from one to another.
the ability to play guitar has nothing to do with my dislike for them.
they might have had an off night when i saw them live, but seriously i saw better local bands than that.

Rich, who said that they CAN'T play? I'm just saying that their music sucks and never will give props to anyone who plays shity music and his style of playing isn't my cup of tea even if he can play well. I'm not obligied to appriciate what I don't like. That's my point. I don't want people telling me or anyone else what to do/listen/like/appriciate/whatever.

Well, that's true, you don't have to like it, and I'm replying more to the general theme of some posters who are saying "AHA!! This clip sucks, therefore THEY suck!! It's all done with smoke, mirrors, Pro Tools and auto Tune!".

I know, that's not a literal quote, but it's the vibe of the naysayers. I'm just speaking as someone who's in his late 40s now and who was in his mid-20s when the shred scene first evolved. This wolfpack mentality hurt that scene first time around IMO. There is always someone faster and cleaner, but if ONLY THE fastest and THE cleanest player is valid, then there's a lot of shit lying in his wake. This is what fuels the anti-shred sentiment too.

Frankly, what you describe is what I feel when I hear the death and black metal. I can certainly dig the musical parts but the vocals, to me, ruin the whole thing. But I do not think they suck just because I can't relate to it. I just say it's not my cup of tea. Which is NOT the same thing.

Like I said, I'm not particularly a Dragonforce fan. But they're playing music closer to my taste than grunge or gnu-metal or emo, so I'm for that in general. I also thought it was funny when Totman downed his beer while Li soloed and finished it in time for HIS solo. That was just silly, which tells me they have a sense of humor.

I guess you kids don't remember the dark decade of grunge and gnu-metal. Well, in europe you didn't experience that like we did Stateside. I just think it's better to support your basic genre of metal than to infight. Maybe it'll thrive longer this time.

Newsflash: Metal bands have been crazy, silly, drunken and drugged out from the start! They don't take themselves too seriously. It's supposed to be fun, you know.

Maybe your living in a former communist country has given you a dour outlook on life and music. If they wanted to be dour professionals they could have gone to conservatory and studied classical music, and walked around with a stick up their ass for the rest of their lives.

As for your local bands, good for them. Are they playing anywhere outside Slovenia? Maybe get into Croatia once in awhile? There must be some reason Dragonforce is doing so much better than they are. Don't envy them because they have some success. Go gain your own sucess instead, then you'll realize they worked for it just as you did. It may give you more respect.

Dragonforce plays fun power metal and happen to be able to shred the socks off of me. That is enough of a reason to enjoy them. Sure their songs all sound the same; sure all their vocals are about fire and battle; sure the drummer has two beats. But they're still one of the better metal bands on Headbanger's Ball these days. It's so refreshing to have a band that doesn't take themselves seriously, always screaming about depressing, dark things,while playing jug-jug riffs on their whole-step-downtuned 7-strings.

As far as all of these comparisons to prog bands Dream Theater and Symphony X....I never thought that Dragonforce was going for prog. They rarely jump into an odd meter or display much instrumental dexterity aside from speed. I don't think it's fair to compare them. It's like comparing a Ford Focus SVT with a Porsche 911 Turbo.

so Bill, Rich about proving yourself, kinda childlish I think. My good friend here JC_Denton is a smoking young player. He could play every fucking Loomis or Alexi fag solo with ease, and I like his playing way more better than their's. And some asswipes on the net demanded that he should play this and that and whatever to prove himself. So he played Jason Becker's Serrana, it's been posted here too. But he almost got a tendonitis because he had to learn that tune so quick, because otherwise he would have been a fag. So that's cool uh?

I guess I can buy I fugging Pod XT and record some fugging scale runs and arpeggios to prove myself. I haven't bragged in every thread how fucking badass of a player I'm, but trust me I can play. My second gig ever was in front of 6000 people, I get offers all the time from local hi budget producers/artists to do sessions or whatever. Not many can get that kind of acknowledgement. But I don't give a fuck, I don't have to prove anything. I post my music If I feel like I want to post not because somone else wants to. I'm not falling that low.
