  • Craig Goldie/Dio

Saw Dio Sunday in Tokyo. Craig Goldie's great guitar player his tone was awesome. Don't know how they were wired up but he two Engl stacks and two JCM800 stacks. He switched between a Warlock and some sort of ESP strat. Freakin godlike tone!
RJD's band is awesome too, they get the award for best bad of the fest, runner up is Opeth. Both are totally professional and sounded great. First time seeing both and they did not disappoint.

ESP sent him a strat hoping to work out an endorsement deal.

And for those who have not seen Dio live, you have no idea what you are missing.I saw him play to 25,000,and I saw him play to about 2,000.You could not tell any difference in his or the band's performance.

I saw Dio twice. Once with Viv and then the following year with Craig Goldie. I remeber the Goldie show and it kicked ass, but I don't remember much of the Viv show except Megadeth opened and it was by far the loudest show I ever went to.

Hard to tell from where I was, had a double row of knobs and really chromed face. He was signing autographs at the ESP booth beforehand I should have gotten his signature.

My favorite Dio guitarist without a doubt He laid the foundation for all guitarists who played with Dio later but there's only one Craig Goldy!

Hope the Heaven and Hell deal is true. Big Viv and Aldrich fan here but I'm not big on Goldy. He's good and all, but nothing special IMO. That wouldn't stop me from seeing Ronnie and crew live though. They Rock!!!

I thought Goldie was kinda weak. Although to me any Dio guitarist has to be compared to Blackmore and they all fall short of that mark IMO. It's funny I saw him with Goldie a long time ago and when Yngwie came out for Man on the Silver Mountain Goldie looked like he wanted to hide.
BTW There was an article about Dio in the LA Times and they said he was 57?? I think it's probably closer to 67??

Nice to see this thread really, everyone was so all about Doug Aldrich. I've seen both several times and tho Aldrich is a great player, Goldie gets the prize, by far, from my point of view.

I think Aldrich killed it for me when he was playing Stevie Ray solos during the Dio solo spot... Fuckin ruined the metal vibe, and a lot of other normal non-guitar oriented people there also felt the vibe crash as well... People were like wft?

Goldie was always tasty as hell when I saw him live. Definitely bad assed...

I think part of the probl;em is that many peple HAVEN'T been able to see Goldie live, since he always seems to hurt his hand or something. I'd like to see him though.

seen goldie live, aldrich on the dvd. i didnt think aldrichs blues stuff killed it. dio isnt 100% serious metal anyway. part of the fun is the dragon schtick. that said, when i saw him live you completely forget about the cheesiness and your completely focused on THE ROCKING. 2nd best concert ive ever seen, after roger waters.

Goldy, I spelled his name wrong, oops. Final Sacrifice I totally agree it's all about the rock, really a great show. While Goldy may not be an Yngwie level note meister he is still a great guitar player and really clean. He had two solo breaks actually they were tasty and very appropriate for the music. The thing that got me was his tone. It was freakin' awesome! First chord I was like holy shit I think that's the best thing I've ever heard. The rest of the band was great too. RJD for being like 666 years old moves and sounds like he's 25.

HUGE DIO FAN! Best singer i've ever heard. I love Goldy's playing too. I've always liked Goldy's white Warlock.
