  • Alice in Chains.Zappa play Zappa, The Stones. A weekend in Atlantic City.....

Well, the Stones cancelled this past Friday in AC. We were there to see Alice anyways, so no biggie. I go up to the Borgata for shows/gambling/etc...All the time as its an incredible/small venue and they bring in big time acts all the time.

So we are there Friday with no Stones to see, but I remembered they had another show going on that nite in an even smaller venue, Zappa plays Zappa. I jumped on the laptop to read about the show itself, and lo and behold, its Dweezil playing his dad's stuff, and who is in the band, among others? Vai AND Bozzio! I have worshipped Terry since I was 10 years old and Vai is always great. So I called down to the host desk to see if they could hook me up, and he says "how about 2nd row" Hell yeah!

Great show even though I couldnt tell you one song from Zappa. Dweezil threw down, lots of Vai and Terry was amazing. Incredible band, every one of them. It made up for the Stones tenfold..

ANd then Alice on Saturday. I saw them a couple of weeks ago down here in Orlando and that was an awesome show, but this was even better. The thing you have to realize about seeing them, is that Duvall is not replacing Layne. He isnt even a band member. They are just doing a tribute to Layne with videos of Layne throughout the show, etc....He does a great job and fits right in without trying to be Layne. Quite emotional actually. They rocked hard, it was a great show.

Anyway, all in all, a great weekend. Got taken to the cleaners at three card, but oh well....LOL

Long live Layne....Miss ya bro. You were the man.

    Shawn,

I saw AIC last night in Albany. I gotta say, I never got to see them originally with Layne as the front man because I was pretty young at the time. But I must say, last night was one of the better if not best shows I have ever been to. Jerry was on, and you could tell him and the rest of the guys were having a great time. The cutscenes between sets were very moving, getting a huge roar from the crowd at the end of them. And William did a great job singing - the guy does have a freakin set of pipes on him. All around an awesome show, with them playing for 2 hours.

I just saw the Zappa show last night at the Warner Theatre in DC. If was FUCKING BRILLIANT.

I am a pretty long time Zappa fan so this was magic for me. Dweezil did his dad proud. I've seen other folks try and play Frank but nobody could touch what Dweezil did. The whole band was at *that* level. Truly stunning performances.

Vai was on fire. When Frank listed credits on his albums Vai always got special mention. Everyone else's credits were like "saxophone", "keyboard", whatever. Vai's were "Impossible Guitar Parts", "Stunt Guitar", etc. Vai was there last night - fucking amazing.

Bozzio was god like on the drums. Watching "The Black Page" being performed live with Terry and two other guys was like a freak show. Shawn can appreciate how absolutely insane it was to watch Terry stomp the hi-hat verrrryyyy slllooooowwwwlllyy during that. That was unbelievable limb independence.

Dweezil was a gracious band leader and host. It was truly inspiring to see a performance of that caliber.

Oh, and they played my favorite Zappa tune of all time - Peaches En Regalia. Wicked cool version too!

I was at the Warner Theatre show on Monday also. Holy shit, was that amazing or what??? I've been a Zappa fan for a zillion years and just missed seeing Frank the last time he played the city where I grew up back in '84. That ZPZ band was phenomenal. I thought Vai could have been utilized a little more than he was, but he's so over the top that he might have detracted from some of the numbers. Supposedly Dweezil is planning on taking ZPZ out on the road next year as well, and I damn sure will be there.

Dweezil was badass. I'm still thinking about how great that show was. I want to go again!

I am a dyed in the wool Zappa fan. I freaked when I saw the show in Berlin. Couldn´t believe Terry played the Black Page with the hi-hat going through the whole song like it was nothing.

Saw Frank with Steve in 1982. No words to describe.

Speaking of drummers, any Sean Kinney fans out there? That guy is one kick-ass skinsman. I don't watch drummers very much, but he's really something.
