  • Malmsteen live from 1985

I found this on the HC amp forum. Here's Yngwie at his best. Great tone, playing, etc... I wish he would play Far Beyond the Sun like this now (its my favorite tune of his). I've seen him twice the last couple of years and all he does is solo, throw picks, and spin his guitar around. I actually had to walk out the last time I saw him.

Anyway he's great here, fiery and very inspirational. The whole show is posted, so check it out!

Oh yeah... try to ignore the overdubbed crowd noise

I have this concert on VHS.

I bought the G3 Live in Denver DVD, and was surprised by how fat Yngwie had gotten more than by any of the playing on the disc

I was in a store that when that G3 DVD was on, there's some Hendrix stuff, right? so I didn't connect it with Yngwie right away, I was like "That dude's huge - he looks like one of the Fabulous Freebirds" I bet he would win a handicaped steel cage match against any 5 nerdy hipster music critics who dare to call him "self indulgent"!!!!!!!

It is a show from 1985 that I believe was shot in Japan (I think the Leningrad show was filmed in 1989).

No, it was a show shot in Japan.

Yngwie did a cover of Hendrix's "Spanish Castle Magic" at the Leningrad show, right?

If you liked that live concert from Japan in`85, you'll also like the pro shot one from Japan a year earlier in`84 with Alcatrazz.

I really like the sweeps at 5:30. Is this from some classical piece or what? The sweeps are the same (or very similar atleasr) as ones in COB's "The Nail" towards the end of the song...

I don't have sound on this computer.. so I don't know if I have the right riffs in mind. However, I know that in "the nail" there are a some parts from Bach's "Toccata and Fugue in D minor".. But like I said, I don't have sound here, so it could be a completely different riff you're refering too.

He was wearing his hair shorter like that in '85. The cover of GP in May '85 .. same guitar, same look. That axe got smashed I believe later on when he threw it up in the air while on a tour and failed to catch it.

Some of the licks he was playing showed up on later studio releases over the next couple years. I did not know he was incorporating those particular little pedaltones and classical influenced lines as much then.
He was really on for how young he was at this time.. probably 22, 23, I can see why even Vai was very impressed.
I never saw any footage of him from these years..always much later.

Those riffs at 5:30 are just classically based stuff.. most everything he did back then was heavily Bach based but from what I recall, its not Toccota and Fugue in Dm. I've not heard the COB song tho, most likely COB borrowed the idea from Yngwie.

Yep there are some Toccata and Fugue in D minor parts, but I'm not thinking that .

Is the Alcatrazz one available in the US or do I have to resort to ebay? What about the Live in Leningrad? Is it still available or out of print?

I have a VHS of the Live in Japan '85 and he is tearing it up in that!
