• What did Eddie use...

... when he recorded Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love?

Was it his Charvel Strat (yellow + black tape) or was he playing his old Fender Strat at that stage?

Anyone know about the pickup(s) amp(s) and effects used on that song, too?

I'm trying to recreate the exact sound on my modeler. I think it sounds really close, but something's missing...

the pod xt has a patch called eruption that is dead on to his tone.

i think he was using the strat, and the paf pickup, and marshall variac hodge podge.

I don't think he ever recorded with the black/yellow guitar, I could be wrong.

I thought that he used his Ibanez for that.

I thought Eddie used his Ibanez Destroyer on a lot of the tracks of the first VH album.

Fender Strat? Err.. I don't recall him playing a Fender.

He used the Ibanez Destroyer for a lot of the non-trem use stuff on Van Halen.

Yes he used that butchered Ibanez for the entire Rythm tracks on the first album ...like the Intro to "Aint Talkin"..

Here is Eddies "OLD" Tone ....

His hands
Marshall Superlead
Marshall 4-12 w / 70 wt . celestions
Variac turned down to 90 volts
MXR Phase 90
MXR Flanger
Echoplex
PAF pups....

The POD comes close but "NO CIGAR" .....my Marshall 9200 monobloc w 5881s and JMP-1 Friggin NAILS his tone much better than the POD does ......actually it's not even close . I heard them both up close and personal!!!

The only thing the POD nails id the Effects (Phase/Echoe/Flange/ ....the tone sucks!!!!

Horns, thanks for the info.

I agree with you 100% that the POD tone is close, but not quite there.

Re: What did Eddie use...

Did he use the phase 90 or the flanger in the begining of that song. I never heard an MXR flanger, but it sounds more like the phase 90.

However, I can't get mine to sound like that, I wonder if the effect is only applied to the last 3 notes ? If I get it set to sound like that on those notes then the sweeping makes the Am chord sound weird.

Gads... You guys know I'm a Boutique tube amp fayg...

But... Listen to this (man I hate to do this, cuz I hate these things )

http://www.line6.com/podxt/downloads...o_Eruption.mp3

and it is realllly close. Sorry Bill, it's closer than your sound is to it... Most of it is in the finely tune ambient delay and phase effects I think. Obviously, it's not "quite" there in the realm of tube-ness and the distortion... But, sickeningly close as the vibe of the solo stuff is right on, minus the chunk..

If Bill could get that Delay, phase effect nailed, he'd be right on.

You can't argue it...

yeah not even close good god some people cant just give in that it's been duplicated.

Yes, some of it depends on the guitar used, and pickups and of course the playing style, but thats pretty much it.

From what remember Eddie used the Phase90 in the intro and at the end. And used the Flanger during the solo. And used the Ibanez Destroyer for the whole song on that one. He had that machine gun thing happening in the solo single pup guitar with no switches wont do that. It's also been said it could've been his white Les Paul Custom too.

During the Solo it's sitar and a Phase 90 overdubbing the Rythm track..

The intro just has the flanger kicked in for the 4 note riff on the A string. (A,C,B,C).. at least that's the way I always played it.

Bill is right, phase 90 w/ the guitar and the overdub with the sitar on the solo.
And to think.. that song almost never got to the album 'cause Ed said he kinda embarrassed to present it to the band to do it being only two chords.
