• I Saw Journey Last Night

Alright, hack away about the cheesy ballads, etc., but beyond that they're a band of solid musicians all around and their older stuff rocks.

Neal Schon - the real reason for me being there - just flat out kicked @ss! The dude shreds, while being one of the most melodic players out there. Most of the night he played a black LP custom with a Floyd. Couldn't tell for sure, but I think the neck PU is a sustainer. It was a blade type humbucker, and there were two black mini-toggles behind the bridge. He used a sunburst Fender Strat on a few tunes, too.

Styx put on a good show, too. The sound-alike singers - both Journey and Styx - were uncanny. Very, very close to the originals. REO? I could've cared less, but must admit they put on a decent 80s-ish rock show.

All of the bands concentrated on their fan-favorite hits from the 80s. If they come to your town, check it out.

I saw Neal when he was with Bad English when they opened for Whitesnake and he totally blew me away! After that I always thought he was way underated.

Neal SChon rocks. I saw Journey back in thier heyday during the Frontiers tour. He was incredable. He played that black LP with the floyd then too. He had a few of his Signature models too. Nice to see he hasn't lost his chops from not being as active as he was in the 80's.
Styx, Journey, REO, Night Ranger, Heart, Sammy Hagar, and Off Broadway are all playing in the Chicago area next weekend at the Tweeter Center. Unfortunately im unable to go: I really wanted to see Night Ranger. Oh well maybe next time.

I'll agree with the "Neal Schon rocks" theory as well. I saw Journey a couple summers ago at the MN State Fair, which was their first time out with Steve Augeri (who is a more then ample replacement for Steve Perry IMHO - they sound almost the same!!). Neal sounded amazing! I really liked the songs where Jon Cain (the keyboard dude - I think he's McGyver's tin...) would play guitar as well. Very cool...

Neal was also in Hardline, which is probably one of my favorite AOR groups from the early 90's. If you like Neal, BUY THIS CD - you can find it used all over the place.

The Jouney 2001 DVD is killer as well - Neal gets ALOT of camera time on it - it's DEFINITELY worth the buy!

You guys recall HSAS ? I had this album a WHILE back and as I remember, he rocked on that also.

Neal is one of my favorite players, and is way underrated in the grand scheme of things.

I am a big Schon fan as well.. he's the kinda player that sends the goosebumps with the emotion and taste he translates.

Here's a Chronology of bands and works:

Piranha Blues lounge

BTW, Steve Augeri's former band, Tall Stories.. is one of my fav lessor knowns from the 90's.. good tunes. You can pick up their cd's for a buck or less on eBay + the hidden whammy of s&h of course.

His two records with Jan Hammer were great.

I caught this tour last month in Cleveland. All of them sounded great and of course Neil Schon was incredible as always. I thought overall Styx was the best though. I also saw Journey at their peak back on the Escape tour in the early 80's.

They are actually making a Neil Schon model Gibson Les Paul. He has the prototype already (I think he used it in Worcester last month). It'll be interesting to see how it does. I'm sure the price will be outrageous as with all of their other artist models.

I will say that Styx and REO totally rocked that night, while Journey was just ok. Schon was awesome though.

The link to Neal's site isn't working. Anybody got that discography saved somewhere that they could post it?
please don't put it into words, 'cause I fear what you're thinking

Neal Schon is an incredibly gifted guitarist...he can do it all.....phrasing, technique, speed when required, great at rhythm.....and tone for days...I have the Journey DVD and they are kick ass.........

Man, I would love to have one of his original Schon Guitars...those puppies are worth some serious money now.....I think I read they were made at the Jackson factory?? I dunno how true that is.....but it would be a cool thing if it were.
