Alright, hack away about the cheesy ballads, etc., but beyond that they're a band of solid musicians all around and their older stuff rocks.
Neal Schon - the real reason for me being there - just flat out kicked @ss! The dude shreds, while being one of the most melodic players out there. Most of the night he played a black LP custom with a Floyd. Couldn't tell for sure, but I think the neck PU is a sustainer. It was a blade type humbucker, and there were two black mini-toggles behind the bridge. He used a sunburst Fender Strat on a few tunes, too.
Styx put on a good show, too. The sound-alike singers - both Journey and Styx - were uncanny. Very, very close to the originals. REO? I could've cared less, but must admit they put on a decent 80s-ish rock show.
All of the bands concentrated on their fan-favorite hits from the 80s. If they come to your town, check it out.
