My band used to rehearse in the same studio in NYC at the same time during the week next door to her studio. I saw her quite a bit once a week. this was in the late '80s, early '90s.

First, she is an amazing shredder and neo-classical musician. Many times her band could not keep up with her - very complex.

Second, what you see in her pictures is not an act. She did not have "normal" conversations. Her voice was always yelling or screaming about this or that, her favorite phrase was, well, I better not say, and the F word every two words. Just very constantly confrontational, in your face, don't mess with me 'cause I'll kick your a**. She's nutty. Her mother managed her and is just as nutso as she is. They are peas in a pod. Her mother was always around. She got in arguments with everyone - other musicians, the studio owners, etc.

One day, she got in an argument with one of my band members. Kat had a bunch of people magazines with an article a couple of years old on her she would always carry this around and show people. Well, my guitarist got angry and next rehearsal went and ripped up her magazine. I couldn't believe our guitarist did this, it was not a nice thing to do.

Anyway, we're starting to play and hear Kat yelling and screaming outside the door in the hallway. This was normal and we ignored it, just figured she was going off like she always does. We figured she was ragging on someone else. Then she starts saying she's going to kick our asses, going to sue, we will hear from her lawyer, we better come out, etc. and sends the studio manager in to our studio. He insists that I, as the leader of the band come talk to her. She's really losing it.

Anyway, I kind of felt sorry for her and let her rant, told her during the rants, I understood how she felt, you're right, etc. She finally calmed down. I purposely kept my voice low and we just started talking. After that, she was fine. I realized, she just wanted someone to hear her and take her seriously.

The studio owner was amazed. He later told me I was the first person he had ever heard during all the time she had used his place, that had ever had a "normal" conversation with her in normal tones. After that, we got along, she would always talk normally to me.

Its too bad because she can be just an amazing player, I think her extreme "attitude" puts many people who could have, or could, help her career go somewhere.
