• Bruce Dickinson on File Sharing

Got this from www.melodicrock.com

Bruce Dickinson this week on stage with Iron Maiden - talking about promoting the band's new single via Internet download:

"...The reason that people download music is not because anyone is trying to steal anything. It's because 95% of all the new CDs coming out today just suck! We want you to download our stuff, because we know that our album won't suck, and we know that Iron Maiden fans will do what's right and buy the album!"
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Finally, an artist who gets it.

While I think that 95% might be a little low , I truly believe if an album is good people will go buy the record.

Iron Maiden capializes on cool CD art and other stuff that a fan just won't get if he pirates. Sounds like they got their head in the right place.

These bands will never win against pirating, so Maiden has come up with a great way to circumvent it. Aside from the fact that most fans of any band will buy the real material if it's good.

Definitely not a lot coming out nowdays that I care to buy.

He got it damn right!

Except that in my case:
If a new album comes out by a band I already worship, I don't download anything of it prior to the release, because that would spoil the first listen.

Ohhh, I can't wait until Crimson II comes out...

All of you share my exact opinions on it. I kinda look down on people slightly that download full albums and never buy CDs, but I download MP3s of new bands Im getting into to see if I like them before handing over my hard earned never-present cash.

Re: Bruce Dickinson on File Sharing

I'm with Bruce. I've bought way more albums since the advent of file sharing than I ever did prior. Now, when I go into a music shop, I can make my purchase with absolute confidence. No more suffering the old buyer's remorse, wondering if I've just blown 30 bucks on a beer coaster. Consequently, I've bought a lot more CDs.

I think the bands who are most concerned about it are the ones releasing crap material. If you try before you buy, then they're never going to make any money. The boys from Iron Maiden having nothing to fear. Up the Irons!!

Re: Bruce Dickinson on File Sharing

I think another aspect of the issue is that CD's are just too expensive. Even the good ones. If the artists were receiving like half the money, that'd be one thing. But we know that's not the case. Which is why concert tickets are so expensive. But anyway...

It just doesn't make any sense that BMG can sell you 12 albums for fifteen bucks; but go to the local record store and it's fifteen bucks a shot. I know the stuff BMG licenses is the more popular records, but still...
please don't put it into words, 'cause I fear what you're thinking

Re: Bruce Dickinson on File Sharing

Bruce and Maiden understand it's good music and great preformances that sell a band.

Any band that makes a great disc should not fear because real music fans will buy it to back the bands up.

I like to know what I am getting!

Maiden has got my hard earned cash before and will get it again!

Re: Bruce Dickinson on File Sharing

If you've ever noticed, every CD from BMG has their logo on it along with the original label's logo. They print their own copies and sell them foa pittance.
BMG pays a small fee for copyrights of the original sound recordings (master tape/or Glass Master CD) to the label, and those "12 CDs for 1c" deals are straight profit for them. Because they buy licenses in such large quantities, they are making double their money at least.

All the BMG cds I've heard sound like crap compared to the 'real thing' for some reason.

That is why I like to buy used CDs. Always wondered about BMG!

Re: Bruce Dickinson on File Sharing

Saw Iron Maiden last week in Cleveland. Not only did Bruce say to go ahead and download their music but he also said it was fine with them if you took pics with your smuggled camera, recorded MP3's, cassettes, or whatever.
This is the third time I've seen them live since the early 80's when they opened for Judas Priest on the Screaming For Vengeance tour. After all these years they still impress! Never a disappointment at a Maiden concert
