• Ratt - Guitar Tone

Anyone have the guitar tone from Out of the Cellar dead on. If so what do you use guitar/amp wise?

That is one of my all time favorite CD's but damn I'm having a tough time getting that sound down.

Your advice will be appreciated.

You should ask Chuckracer, he's an old fart from the 80's, he'll know. My guess would be more than likely an ADA MP-1, but I could be wrong.

Good luck getting that tone. Warren DeMartini's tone was mainly derived from early Charvels and an old Marshall head that was considered one of the best sounding Marshalls ever. In fact, I read that George Lynch and Jake E. Lee used to borrow it all the time back in the day!

Ahh, those were the days....

Hey Brian, that's pretty interesting! What was it a Plexi? I've tried Rhino's Black Star model and that captures the old school Plexi sounds so perfectly it's almost funny.

As far as Ratt's tone, I have no clue but with a POD and good ears you can copy ay tone.

MSG got it, except for the head. I've read interviews with George, Jake and Warren where they said they'd go over to one of the other's house under the pretense of just hanging out... but then slip out with that old Plexi! I have no idea who it really belongs to...

Hey, CS... if you've got "good ears," what are you doing with a POD?
please don't put it into words, 'cause I fear what you're thinking

Re: Ratt - Guitar Tone

Actually, from reading interviews, and speaking with Warren personally, it was a 70's Mark II Marshall, modded by Jose Arrendondo on the record. The Laney deal was for the money, and almost exclusively used in the live setting... HIS Marshall was the key to his sound - as well as his effective use of slap back echo, which contributed heavily to his signature tone.

Re: Ratt - Guitar Tone

get a mid to late 70's marshall jmp superlead 100, get it modded, play through vintage 30's, green, or black back 25's through a marshall slant or straight cab and attack the strings accordingly as your fingers do most of the talking. dave ingram turned me on to metal picks
which warren used as well. they are thin but stiff as viagra, and they do not suck in any way.

Re: Ratt - Guitar Tone

I read somewhere that they just came directly out of the back of the Marshall amp (an early 70's plexi) and went directly into the board. Their guitars sound direct on that record, as opposed to Invasion of your privacy, where there are obviously miked sounds. I would guess the slap back echo is there to make it sound less sterile. You can almost get this tone with an old ADA MP-1 though for live use. I play in an 80's metal tribute band and we do several RATT songs so I had to really go back and listen to the sounds to program presets for the show.
