A cool show. They concentrated on their older fan hits stuff. And, thanks to the wife, I got to check it out from a corporate suite! Nice.
Vivian's tone sounded very good but, at times, he seemed a little buried in the mix. And he was a little too obsessed with his wah. Overkill on the amount of use. Except for a brief acoustic set, he played nothing but Les Paul-types all night. Many of them. I think some were real Gibby Pauls, and others weren't. ...Not sure of the other brand(s). (Seats weren't that great. )
Phil was definitely more of the showoff. And his tone cut through the mix very well. Axes galore, all Jacksons of course. Let's see if I can remember them all...
- Black w/diamond plate pickguard PC1, matching headstock, chrome hardware. (...I think Brooks posted pics of this one before.)
- Another strat-ish looking one. PC1 head, dark color. (Black, blue, purple? I couldn't quite tell.) White or cream pickguard and matching pickups. Dark fretboard, possibly rosewood.
- A natural finish'd PC1 (...not "Au Natural"), a dark wood. Or it might've been rootbeer. Matching reverse headtsock, though. Looked cool.
- Another natural finish PC1, looked like Koa to me.
- Redrum, Chlorine, and Solar PC1s. I wasn't exactly blown away by the new Redrum color, as shown in the Jackson catalog. ...But I've got to say, damn, that finish looks like sweetness in person. Especially under stage lights. Definitely changed my perception of that color. And when he switched to the Redrum guitar, his presence seemed to kick up a notch. I suppose it might've just been a change on the mixer or something, but it was definitely noticable, and changed back when he switched to a different guitar. I wonder if there's something special about that axe.
A cool show, guys. Check them out if they come by `ya.
