Re: MTV Music awards for those who care

Hey, word is Britney's bi-curious, and Christina's probably up for anything - we
KNOW Madonna's up for anything. Might've
been a cool afterparty.

Unless somebody cusses or flashes on the live broadcast, the 3 hours usually means
5 to 15 minutes of footage that might interest rock or metal fans. That stuff
will get played endlessly on the highlight reels, and indeed MTV will show the whole show another 100 times in the upcoming year, culminating with showing it again just before the NEXT VMA show.

i dug the opening thing... and i agree with 'bane, dammit! hot skanky chicks smoochin? sign me up, thanks!

i missed dave navarro, but i'm sure i'll see it, as they'll rebroadcast this like a mutha.

oddly enough, i thought that justin's acceptance speech that referred to johnny mother'effin cash was nice. johnny is a national treasure and should be on mt rushmore, imo.

and while i like eminem, my god, most of the rappers that were on drove me insane. i felt like bill for a minute. and while i'm all for watchin beyonce shake herself into a fine frenzy, her "performance" kinda irritated me. at first it seemed like she had a mic, then she didn't, yet she lip synched. why bother? I'm with ya on Johnny Cash.

Why that didn't win "video of the year" is beyond me. Actually, it's not THAT beyond me -- all MTV cares about is the teenybopper TRL crowd.

The "Hurt" video is the single greatest video I have ever seen in my long history of watching videos. PERIOD. Absolutely haunting and powerful. You cannot look away.

It -- and Johnny -- shoulda won.

Ok, to show how big of a poser I am, I'm listening to btitney right now. I still think metallica has sucked since I was 9 years old. And I even saw them live in 92. Kirk COULDN'T touch the solo in beat it. EVH is god no matter what goes on. He is why we are here.

Re: MTV Music awards for those who care

Ed's lawyers were off stage with a writ declaring it illegal to play Ed's solo which is no longer his because he did the whole album (the highest selling pop album ever) for one friggin dollar

What a douche!

And yes, Kirk CAN play a good solo - or at least he could till some dumbass convinced him that "all the greats used a wah"
At least Kirk's solos combined a recognizable melody with technical preficiency. So he's not playing a Jackson or he's not as technically astounding as some other flavor of the week shred-douche At least he hasn't forgotten that music is the combination of MELODY and HARMONY, not a masturbatory exercise.

Let's put it this way - Van Halen had a handful of songs that kicked ass, and a sh1tload of songs that just didn't belong. I've heard fewer guitar solos from EVH than from any other "major" player, and it's not because I haven't listened (at one time I had every VH up to 1984), but because he had more jerk-and-spurt wankfests than real solos. Yeah yeah Eruption, blah blah my ass hurts. Big fukkin deal, someone caught a warm-up session on tape. Too many VH songs were left seeming hollow by not having a memorable solo. His jazz influences may have been avant garde, but his application was way off base.
David Lee Roth made that band, not the wanker with the Charvel. When DLR left, VH turned to sh1t. Hagar rocks on his own or with Montrose, but did not belong in Van Halen.
VH needs guitar lessons. He learned every Clapton lick, but didn't USE them! Hell I can learn every Yngwie/Vai/Becker lick but if I don't USE them I've wasted my time!

Dude go back and listen to Fair Warning.........

Ok, Now you relise just how good EVH is,now listen to Balance. He is the best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be.

I just don't get it how people can not listen to all the GREAT music VH has put out since 1985 just because Roth's not in it. Even VH3 is a great album and probally 1 of my favorites that was released in 98. It's just like people not listening to Tommy Lee's new stuff just because it's not the Crue. People are missing a LOT of great tunes.

Re: MTV Music awards for those who care

I actually thought Van Halen sounded better with Sammy. Dave's voice is not the greatest and neither is Sammy's, but Sammy still sounds better. And the F.U.C.K. and Balance albums kicked major ass!! VH3 I thought was okay.
Really the only thing DLR brought to the band was his flashy stage performance/showmanship/poseur ability, IMO. I admit, I got into playing guitar in the mid '80s mainly because of EVH and what he was doing at the time was a little different, but he's not the be-all/end-all of guitar players. There were so many better guitar players before him and after him that it's not even funny.

And I can't stand Motley Crue any more because of Vince Neil. John Corabi was a better singer and they should have just kept on with him. Old Crue and VH kicked ass, but the later lineups were better and did more justice to the bands, IMO.

There's a lot of people who won't listen to MC94 to. Now that's stupid. That's probally my 2nd favorite album of all time. If anyone wants to listen to an awsome heavey Fukken album go buy that. I love vinnie to though, Swine was a good album, and New Tattoo was killer with Randy. I wish corabi would've stayed in the brides though. Hopefully someday they can do another album with John. Now I'll also make the aurgument that Nikki's one of the greatest song writer's of all time too. Never get me started on the Crue or VH.

Re: MTV Music awards for those who care

EVH to me was the GOD of guitar back when Van Halen first came out. Up until Eruption I had never heared anything like it before. Eddy showed us a whole new approach to shredding. He inovated several techniques that a few others were using at the time. I have to say he was the guitarist that everybody wanted to be, but knew they couldn't be when I was a kid. I think the 2nd guitarist to totaly amaze me was Steve Vai when the Yankee Rose video came out. David Lee Roth had a waaaaaaaaaaaaaay better lineup than Van Halen did. Sheenan (I think that's how it's spelled) and Vai were a dealy combonation that whipped the spandex off of EVH and Michael Anthony at the time. I'd have to say another axe grinder that blew me away was............Kirk Hammett. The first time I slid Kill Em All in my boom box I had to rewind Jump in the Fire and Whiplash several times because this kid was fast. I guess I can cite these guys as some of my greatest influences.

Another thing..........did anyone else notice that Metallica's live sound is ten thousand times better than the production on the new album? If the new album sounded like that I would be alot more into it.

MTV sucks and has been climbing the Suck Scale since the early 90's. Rap killed it for us as far as rock and metal's rein on music television of any kind. Senseless droning about nothing sells. The sit-com also killed it and the reality shows. I can't even watch the Ozzborne's anymore. I can't stand Sharon or Kelly. They way over act and every show is nothing more than censor bleeps over their every other word is f**k mentality. If my daughter acted like that she would have a size 91/2 broke off in her a$$!

MTV SUCKS.

Re: MTV Music awards for those who care

OKay, the "Beat It" solo is not one of Eddie's hardest; Kirk is capable of it though he might not care to do the homework. Bob Rock has said that of him in the past.

Dave really was the spark that took Van Halen to the top initially; his OTT bravado and party-circus ringmaster persona were what people got off on. By the time Sammy came along they were well-established, so they could keep their momentum. As much of a guitar god as Ed is, Dave's
wild antics got them much of the early attention. Ed was #2 in charisma factor with Dave in the band.

Yes there were much better players before and after Ed, but most were obscure, and Ed raised the bar as for general average proficiency of rock guitarists, there's no doubt of that. Even Yngwie, the next guitar icon to raise the bar, is pretty obscure compared to EVH. Dismissing his
technique as masturbatory basically states what's true of most shred guitarists. Maybe it's easier to dismiss it than to learn how to do it. Fair Warning was a great example, as is Women and Children First. Great solos throughout, if you listen and can decipher it.

Motley Crue with Corabi was much better than with Vince; sadly the fans didn't accept Corabi. He's way better than Vince Neil ever was, but Vince is the Dave of Motley Crue.

MTV has uniformly sucked for the past 10 years; expect otherwise and you'll be disappointed every time. Rockers will probably get a consistent 10 or 15 minutes airtime per 3-hour awards show from now on. Half the crap they palm off as rock is Shrimp Brisket type crap.

No one will ever agree on any of this, though. That's human nature.
