Can someone explain to me exactly what grindcore is, or is supposed to be? I have Cephalic Carnages "lucid Interval"( ), which is cool, but it doesn't really give me a solid understanding of the subgenre.

Re: Grindcore
Listen to Nasum !!
They're from my home town and are really big in the Grindcore genre... And they're alot better than some goregrindbands that just suck.

Re: Grindcore
Drip, interesting that they lumped Godflesh under grindcore on that page you posted. I don’t think I would consider Godflesh grindcore, but they’re probably there just because Justin Broderick used to play for Napalm.
Checkout www.grindcore.com you may be able to get some useful information there if you can sift through all the crap that's on the forum.

Re: Grindcore
listen to cryptopsy, they're masters of grindcore, though you might wanna check out the stuff with Lord Worm (?), preferably anything off None So Vile...To me grindcore is like death metal, but with a different kind of sound, i dont really draw the line much between the two anymore.
Cheers

Re: Grindcore
yeah I have a bolt thrower CD. they definately grind it out. Honour Valour Pride. It's ok. I get bored with it pretty quick though.
yeah that site I posted is extremely opinionated. He accuses every band of selling out as soon as they get some decent production, and/or add a littel melody.
Read his at the gates and Carcass album reviews. He's a dick.

Re: Grindcore
The old differences between grindcore and death metal have been blurred by bands like Cephalic Carnage, who happen to be one of my favorite bands, and I am good friends with them too.
The traditional differences were these:
Grindcore: Usually punk-rooted, not neccisarily technical, but almost always fast. Lyrics could cover anything from politics(traditional grindcore, ie. Nasum, Napalm Death, Brutal Truth) to gore(goregrind, ie. Retch, old Carcass, Cattle Decapitation) to subjects that were revolting or hilarious, or just whimsical(all sorts of genres, pornogrind, necrogrind, you name it ie. Anal Blast, Bloodduster, Pig Destroyer). Sometimes grindcore did not take itself very seriously, and has usually had an attitude of rebellion.
Death Metal: Death metal usually has more focus on playing than straight grindcore. Bands like Morbid Angel and Suffocation took technical playing to new levels. And also death metal usally has the dark/evil/sadistic vibe to it, which isn't always there with grindcore. Death metal bands often have lyrics of carnage and death(Cannibal Corpse, Deeds Of Flesh, Vomitory) and of evil, occult or anti-Christian nature(Incantation, Morbid Angel, Deicide).
I honestly think that Bolt Thrower is considered grindcore more from the scene they came from than their actual playing style. They came from the same time and area as bands like Carcass and Napalm Death, as opposed to death metal bands of the time, which were almost exclusively American, like Morbid Angel and Immolation. I leave Death of out this lineup because Chuck didn'tlike being called death metal. He is known for his quote "it's just metal damnit!!"

Re: Grindcore
Thanks for all the info dudes. That clears up a lot. It was mainly the grindcore label I heard everyone using for Cephalic Carnage that had me confused. Their cd Lucid Interval is just all over the place, so I couldn't really tell what this whole grindcore thing was.
I never knew Napalm Death was considered grindcore, much less people consider them to be some of the founders of the genre. Awesome, I love Napalm Death.
